CMOS is starting off with a positive reputation.
Question: I just bought a 2001 Sport Trac 4.0 (5R55E). Tranny seems to be working well.

Would y'all recommend I go ahead and do the TSB now to avoid problems in the future, or should I just keep driving it until I exhibit some problems?

Thoughts?

i would deff stay ahead of the tranny fluid changes. and if you are confident that you have the skill, i would do the upgrades on the next tranny flush.

I like the keeping up on the tranny fluid changes part!!!!

Around here the old timers say "yah don't fix what aint broke" lol
So I'd probably opt to leave the tranny alone if it's doing ok.

I have a 2006 (47K) Limited that when the vehicle is fairly cold the transmission lunges forward when just before coming to a stop. The reason I say fairly cold is that I live in the desert and it is not really that cold here, so this typcally happens when initaly driving around. It stops after about thirty mins of driving.

The dealership says that this is typical and probably a high idle problem?

I have read plenty of horror stories about Ford trannys and have had three replaced on my 01', F250, I just hope I am not going down the same path with this one.

Can anyone shed any light on this issiue for me please?

If you think the Dealer is right about a high idle condition, maybe consider removing & cleanng the IAC.

I did this on my 99 4.0L about 2 months ago & thats checked up a down shifting/higher than normal idle problem, when coming to a stop.

IAC = Idle Air Control solenoid.

It's mounted on the intake air tube, between the air filter & throttle body.

The computer uses it to feed by-pass air around the throttle body & thus control idle speed.

Sometimes it gets dirty with carbon deposits & the shaft connecting to the internal valve & lets too much air into the engine, whe the throttle is closed.

Only one electrical connector & two small bolts holding it on, easy to remove & clean. I used WD-40 & a foam swab to clean mine, only because I didn't have a spray can of throttle body cleaner.

If you decide to try cleaning yours, hold the little protruding cap that contains the IAC's air filter, in the up position, so any loosened crud doesn't clog the filter, or the spray solvents don't damage it.

Cleaning doesn't always work for long, so if cleaning clears the problem, but the problem returns, replace the IAC.

Question '96 Explorer no 2nd gear

Ok I have a '96 explorer 4.0 with 151k miles and the tranny has lost 2nd gear/or has very little left. I have read all of the pages here as well as done the fluid and filter changes (I do all the sugessted PM work and the fluid was not burt and a normal odor) I also did the Lucis . I do have engine braking in 1st but if I shift Drive to 2nd the tranny go to netural . Have had the pan down and been to the local tranny shop they said the tranny pressure was good and the solenoids were working but for some reason 2nd was slipping or not shifting (DUH!!! AS if I couldn't tell) suggested total rebuild ($1800.00 to $3000.00) because of the age and miles. I did get the code from the truck which is (P0756 Shift Solenoid B check performance or stuck). So far I have not seen this posted as of yet. Could it be a valve body/gasket problem ? O/d will blink and the ck engine light is on because of the code, I do own a scan tool and get no other codes. I now use this truck as a station car and it goes a 1/2 mile a day as is but I would like to fix it Because it is in MINT shape (plus it needs to pass N.Y. State inspection the check engine light is a big no no but the scan tool fixed that for now ). I have 95% of all the tools I'll need. I wanted to try a rebuild on my own but after looking at the manual and pic's not so sure to date all I have ever done with transmissions is remove and replace .
If anybody has any ideas or info please post it or email me....

Also if any one has any feed back on the Phoneix Remanufactured Transmissions www.phoenixhardparts.com (thinking of just getting the tranny $599.99 + 300.00(del)+350.00(core)=$1250.00- 350.00(core return)= $900.00) this is the ebay price (Item number: 160213373704)

Thanks

yours might be too far gone to fix, id explore a new tranny option (or rebuild your current one)

kel_bs sweak under dash/seat

I now have a sweaking(as if something needs to be greased) under driver's seat and under the dashboard/driveshaft or steering column/wheel????? Can't really pinpoint where in the steering it's coming from.

Kel_bs,
In the past I have found that sweaking form under the seat area which is near the back of the tranny or sweaking near rears is a dry/bad u joint

'96XLT Tranny Problem?

My '96 Explorer XLT 4.0L (approx 140K miles) recently exprienced a drivetrain failure. It will not move in either forward or reverse. If I jack up the rear end & put it in gear, the wheels move in the appropriate direction (forward or backward). When lowered to the ground, it will move in forward or reverse VERY slowly if I rev up the engine. Other than a faint "scraping" sound coming from the bellhousing area when in gear, nothing else seems unusual---fluid level is fine & appropriate color. Also, when the vehicle moves either forward or backward (slowly) there are no unusual noises. Am I most likely looking at a TC failure or something more extensive? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I've been thinking that I had the gasket problem, but now I'm not so sure. I pulled the codes from my '95 XLT, and it's saying that I have a wrong gear ratio in 4th gear. Could this still be related to the gasket fix that's been discussed, or is this something different?

Thanks!
