Excursion in N. C.

Excursion in N. C.
Mod., if this should be in the N. C. forum, please move.
Ok, here is one I have lots of conflicting information on. I picked my new-to-me Excursion on Saturday. I think this thing has a curb weight (am I saying that right?) of 7800lbs? In N. C. you get 4k lbs with a 500 lb leeway with a standard registration. So technically, I could get an overweight ticket just getting on the street with a standard tag? I plan on towing a camper at a much later date, so I can upgrade the weight when my registration is due. For now I just want to be legal with the Excursion and maybe 1500 lbs of payload.
Or is the Excursion different? I have an old Chevy Blazer that is considered a station wagon (one of the first SUV's and the state just classified them as SW). I notice that the Ex is listed as a MP vehicle. Don't know if this minor techicality will make a difference?
So, can I buy weight on a "First in flight" tag, or do I need commercial / weighted plates? How much do these generally cost? Seems like everyone I have talked to at the tag offices have a different opinion. I don't want to go to the weigh station to ask a question and come home with a ticket?
I know this is fairly specific to N. C., but I hope someone else has experience with this?
Thanks....

Thats the link to NC DMV. It doesnt say you cant have a vehicle at 4000 lbs. You can register a private vehicle at 6000lbs or under. As far as towing, the weight is GVWR, you can put your camper on the back and as long as you do not exceed the GVWR while towing you will be ok.

Just tell them MP stands for Multi-Passenger! Then you can register it as a Passenger Vehicle for $28.
It certainly wouldn't qualify as a truck under 6K. In fact, I would garner a bet that you don't have to register it as a truck even though WE all consider it one. I bet the previous owner registered it as a passenger vehicle.
BTW, your curb weight varies based on driveline and options. You can get a rough idea from the ARTICLE/SPECS bar above. No Excursion has an advertised curb weight of 7800lbs.

Monsta, Maybe I am blind, but I can't find the curb weight. I have a '01 4x4 LTd. with V-10. Any ballpark idea?
Talked to a lady at local tag agency that used to work for the DMV. She states as long as it is classified as a Multi-purpose I don't have to buy weight. If it is a truck over 6k, I would need to purchase a weighted tag. Seems to be a loophole with the SUV's. It doesn't make sense that this is registered the same as a Cavalier, but I'll take it.
My only concern is being weighed. I guess I will go plead my case in front of a Judge if that happens. But then again, who is foolish enough to ask the "Ex" what she weighs?
Looks like the advantages to an Excursion just keep multiplying.

Typo. The specs here at FTE leave a bit to be desired. I know they get them directly for Ford so it must be Ford's infomation is screwed up. Certainly wouldn't be the first time.
It'd be safe to guess that those two numbers are opposite. But even then the spread is too large when comparing the 4x4's numbers. Best bet: have your truck weighed.
