Sputtering and dying....very sad

I am so glad I found this place. I just got my first truck. The first vehicle that I have owned that I absolutely love. Lately though I have been rather frustrated with it. I have a 1980 Bronco with a 351M. Lately it has been sputtering and dying when I put it in gear or when I come to a stop. When it is in neutral sometimes it idles at +-800 rpm, sometimes it idles over 1200 RPM. Today it started dying constantly whenever I couldn't give it enough gas to keep going, and it seems to be running a bit rough now. It also backfired for the first time today. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me. Thank You.

I'd check for rust or other trash in the fuel lines. Ecspecially if this truck ever sat unused for a long period of time.

Backfiring sounds like timing problem...
