Low Fuel = NO fuel!?

Well, it happened, 2nd time in my whole entire 34 years on this planet..i ran out of gas. First time it happened I was 17 and the gauge didn't work. This time I was running down the freeway and the low fuel light came on the display with the beep. 3 miles later, I am on the side of the road. This completely shocked me, I have gone 10-15 miles before with the "low fuel' on. I did notice that my little silver flap that goes over the fill tank nozzle is missing, does this have something to do with it?? I was in danger on the side of the road because people can't drive in general (lol) I know I shouldn't let my fuel get that low, BUT I have had no problems in the past. The truck has around 12k and is an 06 super cab 4x4 5.4 xlt .Like I said the little silver gas flap is missing now (No idea where it went) If anyone knows whats up, please let mek know, it is a mystery to me!

I would go to the dealer, is the truck still under bumper to bumper coverage?
Check on the tank issue with them first.

My truck ran out after about 35 miles after the light came on but I was towing about 4,500 lbs of travel trailer. You should have had about a 50 mile reserve.

Thats what I thought about the amount of "reserve" that you should have. I did figure this out after MUCH thought. I was parked on a hill (front of the truck was up higher than the rear) then hit the expressway immediately after being parked there. MAYBE that caused a false sense of how much fuel was in there, and when I was cruisin, it ran out....MAYBE!!!!
As far as the little silver flap (thanks for the link by the way) I thought it was there...i swear it was there..but maybe not! Its running perfect now, so thats good news....thanks everyone.

I've had an 04 for almost 3 years, and just noticed the little flap missing on mine. Unless I'm going crazy I could swear mine was there also. I don't think I've ever seen an unleaded vehicle without one. The kids are always accusing me of this kind of stuff, but I'm SURE it was there??? MAYBE,, LOL????

you should have a pretty good reserve left after the light comes on. for a 30 gallon tank, I put 20 gallons in at 1/4 tank. when I run it to the low light comes one, I only put in about 25 gallons (if I fill it immediately).

that still leaves me roughly 75 miles before I am truly out (figure 15 mpg)
