It seems clear that tonneaus are good for fuel mileage, especially if lots of highway driving. I'm more concerned with keeping out the elements but I want a soft cover for cost reasons.

I searched back to December 2005 looking for what the most weather proof tonneau might be - no clear answer. I know soft tonneaus are not as good as hard ones, or bed caps, for keeping out the elements.

So, I put forth this question - based on your epxerience with whatever tonneau you might own, of the soft tonneau covers out there, which are the most weather proof or water tight of the bunch?

Appreciate any opinions on this one. Thanks!

 

Although no tonneau cover can claim to be 100% water proof, the Truxedo Lo Profile does an excellent job of keeping out the elements. It has weather seal on the front and rear header, weather seal along the length of the rails and weather seal on the ends of the rails. So all four sides of the cover help protect your truck bed from the elements. The cover has a lifetime warranty and is very durable.

that's my answer. rain/snow/sleet/whathaveyou - still looks puuuuuuuurty! (more importantly, functional)

 

I have had lost of big name covers. Be fore went to hard cover. (Which suck if you want to use bed) All covers the same in weather department. But most leak at tail gate area Not much can do there. or between seal to bed . But they all do well . Some are better than others at snow load etc. just research what you need for your area and check specs good luck

 

I have a Extang full tilt on my truck and its not purfect but it has to rain pretty hard for me to get any water in.

Just so you know though the show mythbusters did a revisit on the gas milage thing about trucks and you gain no advantage buy putting on a tonno but you will lose if you dont and drop the tailgate.

 

i'm not sure if it's the same episode i watched, but if i recall correctly, there was a small increase in milage with a tonneau, most noticably the "air net" type. if you drop/took off the tailgate it was worse. again, that's if i remember correctly. is it worth the 200-500 (or whatever cost) to gain that little milage? depends if you want the look and functionality of it too.

 

It's definitely not worth the expensive if your buying it for mileage and not function. The one I saw they revisited the tests because they said they had 100's of emails and letters that they didn't test all the possibles. What shocked me was the best mileage came from removing the gate and putting one of those nets in its place but between gate up and with a tonno the results were the same.

 

I agree with kellie, I have a truxedo LoProfile and it does a great job of keeing the rain out. I get a drip now and then in the corners by the tailgate other than that perfect.


Kellie, is there a replacement tailgate seal. The one mine came with was a rubber flap that completely separated fron the cover in a month. My dad baught the same cover as mine and his has a plyiable seal. I baught the cover froma dealer on eBay. Brand new direct shipped from the factory so I never got around to getting a new one because of the eBay thing.

 

Only had water problems when I went through the car wash with my Access's. Definately recommend the trail seal, ends the water spray from the sides and bottom of the tailgate. Just the corners will let some through, but haven't had any problems with rain. Access now comes with a additional seal at the front of the box making it even more weather proof.

 

Trail-seal seems to work good for the tailgate.
