98 4.2 145,000 miles

I started to add coolant to this truck around 65,000 miles around each month. I add about a quart of water. I have been doing this for about a year and still running fine. Although when i change oil , I find yellowish/white cream on the oil filler cap. I also find brownish jelly-like stuff in the oil filler tube. What do I do. This truck runs fine, but I know this is not a good sign. any info thanx

Sounds like head gasket leak. It allows some anti freeze to get in the oil. Ever had any overheating problems?

Pressure test your cooling system, or have it done if you don't have a tester. You may have a leak either at the head gasket or timing cover in the front of the engine. Don't procastinate, if you have water in your oil, your bearings won't hold up well.

No overheating problems, here in the hot texas weather this truck stays pretty cool with the a/c going all the time, at least thats what the temp gauge tells me.

The white stuff on the cap etc. may be from general moisture. Sometimes, if you don't drive far on a daily basis, water can be trapped there.

Look at your oil. Does it look like a milkshake on the dipstick? If yes, you get coolant in your oil. I think it is unlikely, because after 80k miles your engine would be long toast.

Where else can the coolant go? Radiator leak? Heater core? Hoses? Water pump weep hole? You want to make sure you test the system and find the leak. If you can look at a cold engine that hasa pressurized system, you won't believe what you see. A minor leak that may only develop when the truck is warm may go undetected but if everything is cold and you can inspect well, you will find it. You can also listen for it.

Cheers, George
