I am looking at a 99 F 150 4X4 with a 6 4.2 5 speed. any ideas what to look at? Anything go wrong like clock work? I also am worried about the 4X4 hubs any good a guy at firestone said that they had a guy with a ranger with the 4 on the fly break them like once a month. Thanks for all the ideas, James

read the 4.2 forum. i have 4.2 4x2 and it moves along fine except in the mountains. 4x4 would put even more load on the v6. take it for a long test drive up some hills b4 you buy.

I had a 97 regular cab 4.2 with a 5spd 2 years ago, and i couldnt wait to get rid of it. It wasnt bad to drive, it seemed to have plenty of zip. But if you had a load at all, or were bucking a wind, or driving in hills it wasnt pretty. The milege wasnt any better than my 5.4 extended cab 4x4. I think the added weight of the 4x4 was just a little too much for the small engine.
