Wingmaster Aerotravel / MPG

A few weeks ago, I went to GA to pick up a trailer in my new-to-me 2005 4x4 v-10 X. I was happy with the 13 mpg traveling down to GA, but very disappointed with the 8.5 mpg with the trailer. I was also disappointed that the X wouldn't tow a 3,300 lb enclosed trailer in overdrive. I'm even more concerned about what the mileage will be when the trailer is loaded to 5,500 lbs.

The trailer has an 18' (plus the V) x 8.5' box. The inside height of the box is 6', so I'm guessing the total height is between 7.5' and 8'.

Has anyone used a Wingmaster Aerotravel wing on the top of their X when towing? If so, did you see an increase in mpg? Also, does the luggage rack mounting system work?

Thanks, Cory

Won't tow 3,300lbs. in OD?! Something is wrong.

I could easily tow 6,000lb+ of horse trailer (very tall), horses and tack in OD without breaking a sweat...until I hit large inclines. Never measured mileage so I cannot comment.

Your trailer is has a V shaped front?

You sure the brakes weren't dragging of something? What were the tire pressures on the trailer and on the truck?

I towed 8500lbs+ in overdrive out west on level ground @ 75-80mph w/3.73 gears

I looked into a wing for my last trip but couldn't get a reply from the website. Nothing for sale in stores in my area. I'd be interested to hear someone's experience. Apparently the manufacturer does state that you'll see a decrease in normal not-towing mileage if you leave it on. Watch for cheapie wings - heard lots of complaints of stones shattering them.

My camper is 11' high with the a/c by 8.5' wide 32'. Major wind drag. I watch 18 wheelers get pushed over as I pass them on the left. I would have thought for a small trailer as you've described you would have gotten better mileage also. When I tow our camper on flat ground and stay below 65mph I get 9mpg.

I run 65psi in the camper and truck tires

Thanks for the feedback. It's good to know that I should be able to tow more than 3,300 lbs in OD. The only thing unusual when I was towing was that it was a windy day. Regarding the mileage, I failed to mention that I was towing around 70 mph. I had the truck tires inflated to the factory pressure and the trialer tires at approx 50 psi. I didn't think to check for the brakes dragging, but will do so now.

There is a local Wingmaster dealer here in Memphis, so I guess I'll go talk to them.

Thanks again, Cory

I don't really think you need a wing with a V-front trailer.
