Scored a disc brake donor for $100

It's a '73 F100 shortbed 4x2. Disc brakes. It was advertised on Craigslist as an abandoned project. Haul it away for $100. I didn't even have the heart to lowball the gal when I popped the hood and saw the rebuilt 390 with finned Edelbrock valve covers. I almost hate to take this one apart, but my 66 needs disc brakes and my '76 4X4 Crew Cab needs a bed. They had just finished the bodywork and paint prep when they lost interest. It just takes patience.

Congrats on finding a truck like that. The motor alone will most likely tripple if not more you investment. Good luck on the disc swap.

jhooch, Your post is exactly what I like to describe as waiting and turning over rocks. When we run out and buy the first truck that is available we can pay tooo much. I call turning over rocks to see what is under them waiting and checking out trucks that are or may be available. Sometime just approaching the owner on a possiable donor is all that it takes.

The $100.00 truck doesn't come by every week, but by being vigilant, deals can be found. IMHO

Well bought. However, I'd check to make sure that 390 really isn't a 360 before you do anything with it. No way to tell without measuring the stroke.

Thumbs up

jhooch,
That's incredible in CA! Great Snag. I hope other members read this and realize what the options are when that happens, and as your experience proves, patience pays.
Conversely impatience costs, and sometimes costs BIG TIME too.

I hear ya "JO", we got no rocks 'round here, it's all sand, but patience pays down here also. Over in "Podunk" or out in East JabbabaVille are skads of old trucks just waiting to be collected up.
Can't tell ya how many times over the years I got a call. . . . "I hear you mess with ol' Ford trucks and we have this old Ford Pick Up we want to get rid of, how much do you charge to haul them away?"

It's one of my Favorite calls. O'course, by now, I'm pretty much Notorious Hah !

Yeah, I picked one up (73 F100 or 150) a couple years ago for a "C" note and salvaged what I could off it and had the rest hauled off.

Turns out after getting it home (after the trailer jack-knifed and flipped, truck and trailer no injuries BTW )
the field the truck had been sitting in had flooded at least once. I don't know how much of the suspension may be worthless. I know the engine was no good.
I got both beams, spindles, rotors and calipers. And a few other odds and ends. Hopefully I'll have cores at least.

Wasn't much left of the body of any use after the somersault into the median.
A buddy of mine was hauling it and I was driving along behind. We were only doing maybe 30 but, it started fish-tailing and then pushed him off into the median where the front right corner of the trailer dug into the dirt and over it went. Luckly, his truck sustained only minor damage and two flats on the rear. Toyota T100, 1000 or what ever they are. The trailer was trashed up pretty good but, he sold it to someone who wanted it to fix up.

Talking

OK, Ford Boy Pete, since you owe me, you said it, and since you said you get calls like that, I am placing my order now.
I want a Slick just like jhooch got. I doesn't have to run, but it has to be decent body. My 10 year old daughter told Mr. JC last night that she wants her Daddy to get her a Slickcicle like his - so you gotta come through for me!

Congrats on the great find, Jhooch! That is really swell.

Tracy, Why did you pay a guy to do a job?

You can get much more bang for your buck when you pay someone for having done a job.

I had one a few years back but after a move I don't know where to start looking for it today.
