Where is the elctric shift motor?

Four wheel drive not isn't making a sound. All fuses check out. Instrument Lights not coming on so i'm guessing I need to replace the shift motor, however I can't find it. It might sound stupid, but I don't see it on my 05 F-150. Can someone give me a better idea as to where I should be looking? Is this something easy to get to?

It's mounted on the transfer case.

I understand that much. Can this be seen with the skid plate on?

I don’t have the skid plates, but it’s located directly to the left of the rear drive shaft if your looking at the transfer case from the rear.

Edit: This is the back side of the case, the arrows mark the mounting screws.

Thanks. It's cold and snowing but I'm grabbing a flashlight and taking a look.

Glad you found it. I’d try and get your codes pulled before jumping to conclusions; there are a number of other things that could be causing your problem.

knee, try tapping "lightly" on it with a hammer while someone turns the switch. (this is Ford's method anyway)

Contact Ed,the FTE-guy. Give him your VIN and he'll set you up. I would bet that the motor is the same for all years, so you could find one in a salvage yard as well for less than the dealership. Check the classifies on here or ebay as well. Maybe you'll get lucky and someone is selling one.

I'd be willing to bet it isn't the shift motor.
While it is possible, it isn't that common.

I'd put money that it is the solenoid.
It is located on the passenger side firewall right behind the battery.
Very easy to replace (within seconds). The new solenoids are suposed to have a rain shield on top so they can't get wet.

I had the same problem with mine, cept in my case I didnt check the 4x4 when I bought it so when I wanted it, it wasnt there. When I looked under the truck when I bought it I guess I missed the tangled mess that used to be the harness for the shift motor. Looked like a rabid chinchilla attacked it or something. I called the local stealership and to replace the shift motor with a new one was like $340+ and they didnt have it in stock.
I looked online and found a refurb at rock auto for $178 including next day shipping. got it on and 4x4 started right up. Havent gone mudding yet though.
