01 v10 detonation problem
I have a detonation when im part throttle. At 1st it sounded more like oil starvation. but now im certain its detonation. I changed the plugs, fuel filter and its still doing it. It doesnt do it as much after the truck is fully warmed up(about 25 miles) I run 91 oct. in it. I have no codes at all. I did notice a couple of plugs were pretty worn out with massive gaps. But they did have 97,000 miles on them.
Could it be a coil, knock sensor, or maf sensor? or even bad injectors. I really dont want to go get ripped off by a dealer, but I also dont want to buy a bunch of parts I dont need.

DO all the regular maintenance first. Clean the MAF, change the fuel filter, check for vacuum leaks, etc.
If you have an automatic, check the cover on the bottom of the bellhousing. It tends to rattle at 1600-2200RPMs at part throttle.
Also, one trick to try is: RESET the computer! Disconnect the battery, turn on the headlights, and leave it for a few hours.
In the past 6 years, I've heard of plenty of V10's pinging that needed a reset to clear it up. Especially in that 2001 timeframe.

While I'm never off the throttle enough to allow any carbon buildup, you know there is "octane addiction" in modern motors? Carbon builds up because the higher octane gas doesn't burn as completely as regular. The carbon builds up to the point where it pings. Then, you need even higher octane to keep it from pinging. Until it does it again.
At least, that's the theory...

This pinging is totally different then the need for higher octane ping. The ping that I had was at higher rpms. That was corrected by using higher octane. The ping I have now is at part throttle. I checked out my maf and it looks like it does need a cleaning. Ill post what happens tomorow. Thanks again guys.

CA REQUIRES an EGR (and all green states that adopted CA's emissions rules) for 2007 trucks up to (I think) 14,000 lbs.
Somewhere, somehow, the V10 had an EGR and then it went away.

Not to hijack a thread.....
I have had detonation issues for some time now. 93 octane just about solves the detonation issue. On 87 the ping is a 10 on a scale of 1-10 and with 93 octane it is about 1 or 2.
Now is the time to bring it to someone to look at it. Should I use the dealer incase a reflash will help with the problem or bring it to a very trusted repair garage?
