Transmission noise, Throwout bearing?
I have an 89 f150 I6 300 5 spd Mazda Transmission. 150k mi. I replaced the clutch, slave and release bearing about 3 years ago. Just yesterday it started making noise when clutch is pressed in between shifting and sometimes when stopping. It quits as soon as I let the clutch out. Its a vibrating/grinding type noise like a bearing spun on a shaft. Looking through the hole in the bottom of the transmission, I cant tell if the throwout bearing is bad.It doesnt make the noise all the time and it does not occur at all when clutch pedal is not pressed. I am looking for input because if its inside the transmission, I'm likely not going to attemt repair myself. I can handle the throwout bearing though. Thanks.

Old Mechanics Trick: Driveline noises can be magnified by driving along a road next to a curb, or a wall. The road must be clear of vehicles, for noises to echo back properly.
The old trick was to drive besides a curb, open the left door slightly and listen.
My guess=bad throwout bearing.

When you take your foot off the clutch the throwout bearing stops turning.
If you only have the noise when you put your foot on the clutch then it is the throwout bearing.

It apperars you are right quicklook. I dropped the Transmission tonight and The throwout bearing is ok. The pilot bearing has fallen apart, I some broken rings out of the hole but no needle bearings. I have to get a removal tool to fully inspect it. Does anyone know if that could have caused the noise. I can wiggle the shaft going into the front of the tran about 1/16 and it appears to be leaking out the seal there. I really dont have the money for $1700 rebuilt tranny. Maybe I should take it somewhere and have it checked out. I am hoping the pilot bearing was the culprit though.
