GM in talks to buy Chrysler: reports

General Motors is reported to be in talks to acquire the Chrysler division from DaimlerChrysler AG.

The Automotive News, citing sources in Germany and the U.S., said Friday that high-level talks between the two companies were taking place.

Reuters reported that the discussions were "exploratory," citing an unnamed source "familiar with the situation."

Germany's Manager-Magazin reported similar discussions earlier this week, again citing unnamed company sources.

GM and Chrysler officials have declined to comment on the speculation.

On Wednesday, when Chrysler said it was cutting 13,000 jobs and closing some factories, DaimlerChrysler chairman Deiter Zetsche said the company is looking at "further strategic options with partners" for Chrysler.

"In this regard we do not exclude any option in order to find the best solution for both the Chrysler Group and DaimlerChrysler," Zetsche said.

Analysts said that could mean the sale of the entire Chrysler division.

German newspaper Handelsblatt has reported that investment banker JPMorgan has been hired to investigate a Chrysler sale, spinoff or continued union in DaimlerChrysler.

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal both reported Friday that Chrysler Group and GM have held discussions for about six months about a possible alliance related to large sport utility vehicles.

Speculation on the future of Chrysler has shares of DaimlerChrysler shooting up.

Stock of DaimlerChrysler hit a new 52-week high of $74.53 US on Friday before closing with a gain of $3.08 US at $73.33 US. GM was off 10 cents at $36.34 US.

While investors may be enjoying the speculation, several auto sector analysts have thrown cold water on the talks, saying that the cost of a deal for Chrysler could be prohibitive for all involved.

Daimler-Benz and Chrysler Corp. merged in 1998 to form DaimlerChrysler.

At the time it did seemed very strange that Daimler-Benz would buy Chrysler.
Now it appears to be even more bizarre that the struggling GM Corp is entertaining the same idea. It may be one of the only ways for them to survive or to sink even deeper!

Don't take this too personally. But you're an idiot.

Have you the faintest clue of what competition means in this industry?

Do you know how many hard working Americans would be out of work if they were to kill the Ram?

Ignorant people like you truely disgust me.

If you say so. My supreduty just had the ball joints replaced at 19K miles, the fuel pump sending unit went bad once, now it seems to be going bad again. If I have to start dumping money into my truck to fix it with low miles on it, I may be looking at getting a Dodge ram 2500.

Try telling my dad or my father in law that their dodges are junk. My dad has a 97 quad cab 4x4 with 256k miles. That thing still drives tight and has the original transmission. My father in law has a 96 with 160k miles all original with no major problems also. That truck is used for hunting and pulling his 19 foot lund boat. I am not saying that ford trucks are bad but don't make ignorant statements that if you buy a dodge it is gonna fall apart. Also this theory about the truck body will fall apart around it, haven't seen it happen on these two trucks and they both live in north dakota where the weather can get very extreme. Just had to put in my 2 cents!!!

hmm....Kilometer numbers look impressive till you convert them to miles.

197,000 kilometers = 118,200 miles

224,000 kilometers = 134,400 miles

Figures are approximate, but close.

The bottom line all cars/trucks are junk.

Just buy what you like.

My father had to put a automatic transmission in his Super Duty at around 90,000 miles and if you look around you will find that a lot of Super Duty owners have had trouble with that automatic transmission.

Every brand has trouble!

G.M. Just wants to stay ahead of Toyota!

I see these trucks every day, as I work on cars/trucks for a living. I just don't see many problems with dodge trucks period. I do sometimes, but I see problems with them all. My uncle has a 2000 cummins with automatic, and still has the origional auto at 130K miles, uses it every day for construction jobs.

My truck gets no abuse. I drive 1 mile each way to work every day. haul an atv or 2 every other weekend in the summer, and occasionally tow my 4000 pound boat and trailer. I don't race it, don't 4 wheel it, dont' jump it, etc. If driving to and from work is considered abuse, then I guess i'm screwed.

I'd walk before I buy a chevy/GM truck. can't say that they are bad vehicles either, but it is just my presonal preference.

Did anyone else notice that 93RangerXL4x2 and 89300L64x4 write strangly alike?

You know with blatent disregard for anything resembling capitalization, punctuation, spelling, or grammar in general.

Not to mention the stream of Ford PWNzorz everything!!!111oneoneone babble.

Why don't you go to sleep and let the adults talk now?

95250mac is right in saying that all vehicles are junk. Some are just slightly better than others in certain sectors.

Mike
