Vacuum Pump

Does anybody know how easy it is to change a vacuum pump? Not too sure if i need to change the pump or just the pulley. It is giving a horrible screech and throwing grease around. the pump itself is not siezed, it moves and you can almost hear it working when moving it by hand, threw th belt off earlier in the week, changed the belt and hear the squeal still
Thanks

My understanding is that a vacuum pump will last 100k or so miles. If yoursa is making a noise and throwing grease, it sounds like it has a bearing going bad. As far as I know, components are not replaceable-just the whole pump. I suggest bite the bullet and just replace it.
Not to argue with the factory tech manual...........
But I did it and didn't bother taking off the radiator hose. I measured how far the pulley was pressed on the shaft of the old pump, removed it with a standard gear and pulley puller and carefully pressed it on my new pump with a wooden vise and appropriately sized socket.
It is what worked for me, but in a previous thread there was some concern expressed about my method, if I recall.

There is also, apparently, an upgrade type of replacement vacuum pump that can be used. I don't know enough about it to comment on it though.
This is the link-sorry i don't know how to post it in hyperlink form so you can just click on it. (now I do-just figgered it out)

Anyway- I am sure lots of others will give you advice too. Wait to hear from several sources before you decide what you should do.

if your throwing grease your pump is thrashed! the bearing has gone out and taken the front seal with it. three 10mm bolts behind the pulley. you can get them off before pulling the pulley. one hose and your off. remove the pulley with a power sterring pulley puller. install with a powersteering pulley installer. both could be rented from some parts stores or take the pump to a shop and have then do the swap for you.

the wood block and vice is not a recommended procedure. might work but if the proper tools are availible use them.

there is one or two bolts that must be put in place prior to pressing the pulley onto the new pump.
