I'm also looking at the shift improver for a 89 E350. Banks also makes something called a TransCommand. Both alter the signal the ECM uses to boost line pressure. All I can find is good words about both. The B&M is a lot cheaper. Still not sure which route to go. Don

It looks like the Banks changes line pressure on a curve, while the B&M has two steps as well as off. I want this for towing so don't know whether the extra for the Banks is worth it. I think the B&M is very reasonable in price. Don

I've been running one for a little less than a year and I like it alot. It was easy to install (just 2 wires). I got it for about $42.00. The one thing I was hoping it would do but didn't was change the shift points so there would be more time between 3rd and 4th gear, but it only controls the shift firmness. That's good enough for me, however, and I'm sure I'm saving a lot of wear and tear on my transmission.

FYI, if you install one, you'll see a piece of paper added that cautions against daily driving in the #2 (towing) position. They say it will cause transmission damage due to the higher pressures. Daily driving on #1 is just fine and the shifts are nice and firm. I haven't done any towing yet, so I haven't tested the #2 position.

When you say firmness, you mean speed of the shift? On this 89 the shift takes a long time, seems to hang for a couple of seconds.

I'm talking about the actual transition between one gear and the next. With the stock PCM, that transmission just kind of glides from one gear to the next very smoothly. It might be smooth, but it's also a great deal of friction in there because the clutch plates are allowed to slip as they engage. That's what causes the damage. The firmer shift reduces that friction a great deal and creates much less wear than the factory settings.

I think you'll be pretty pleased with it. One thing I should mention: when the transmission is cold, the shift from 1-2 can be a bit harsh. But once the transmission warms up, the shift is just firm. That's the experience I've had with it, anyway. Your transmission might not act the same way.

Don, I purchased the B&M controller from Summit racing and when I received it the package said 95 to 97 for E4OD. I guess I was in a hurry and did not do enough research, I went back to Summits' website and looked it up. They list 1997 as the only year E40D this will work for. I have a 1989 like you. Let me know if you find anything that works.
Thanks,
WSM

The shift improver I bought also said the same thing, but it gave the transmission codes to which it was applicable. My transmission was code E, which was one of those listed.

The B&M website lists the transmission codes it will fit. It looks like 94 on. What do you have to do to install? Do you have to splice into the wiring or it it a plug? The Banks TransCommand webpage says all E4OD/4R100. From the picture it looks like you splice into the harness. I'm installing a Transgo Tugger 2 improver kit. I think I'll try it first...Don
