Diodes gone in alternator ?
Voltage regulator toast ?

what rpm was the engine running at when you tested for power?

Don't ever remove the battery cables from a battery with the engine running

One common problem is the connectors that attatch to the voltage regulator.Make sure they fit tight and arent rusted.

it was ideling when i checked it and i checked it with the wire atached to the battery terminal so it may not be acurate, and the motor died when i removed the battery cable, which is wrong. i have removed many cables when the car was running and it ran off the alt.

Do you have a ammeter in the dash or a "gen" light? If you have the light, does it work?

You have probably killed some diaods from removing cable & wires while the engine was running.

What you are doing is what they did back in the day of GENERATORS.

It was done to EXCITE the generator into start charging.

when you do this to an Alternator system you screw things up.

ask yourself this question :

When the engine running and I disconnect a wire that is for output..where is that electricity going ?

Hint: It has to Leave the alternator.

Power for the truck comes from a smaller wire hooked to the starter solenoid/relay on the fenderwell. The smaller wire hooks to the large stud that is hooked to the battery +. If this wire is connected, follow it along and see if you have a colored rubber thing in the wire. This is a fusible link, and may be burnt out.
