I have averaged 12 with mine since I bought it and that doesnt matter if I am towing or not. I bought it with 81K and now have 160K on it. I used to work at a Ford Dealership and we ran every test we could think of and found nothing wrong with it except the mileage never got any better. Its a 94 F150 Supercab 5.8 E4OD 4X4 with a 5" lift, 33" BFG's, 411 gears, K & N filter and a custom 3" catback exhaust minus one of the two factory inline cats.

In CC form the 5.8 can be a bit gutless but gears can help. I would choose a 95-97 F350 CC PowerStroke if I could. They can get up to 22 MPG depending on conditions.

bummer , the 95 with the 351 is a very nice truck and i was thinking that the 351 would get better gas mileage than my f250 with the 460 but it appears they will get about the same (12mpg) so i may end up going with the 92 7.3 NA diesel, just because i can possibly get up to 20 mpg...thanks for all ya'll input... nathan

I don't know if this will help at all but I've got almost an identical truck to the 351 you're looking at, except mine is an F150. Just for the record, I've got stock 3.55 gears and I get anywhere from 13-15mpg freeway (doin' 65-70mph). The truck DOES seem a little underpowered with the 3.55's and 33 inch tires, but its got some good gittyup for such a big truck, all things considered.

On a side note, my brother has a 97 F250 with the 7.3L powerstroke, and with the turbo that trucks got some *****. He usually gets around 17-18mpg. Also, he's got 4.10 gearing and 35 inch all-terrains. Hope that helps!

If the gasser is a nicer overall truck I would go with it instead. Where I am from trucks in good shape are tough to find so sometimes you have to settle and build it up later. But I guess if you are thinking strictly from a MPG aspect then the 92' is the way to go because you'll never get near a diesel's MPG.

yea the gasser is ALOT nicer, BUT i commute 65 miles one way so mpg is also a BIG thing, my 460 was eating me out of house and home ( 12 mpg on a very good day but usually less), so i was looking for a diesel but it is a very nice truck. if it would get 15 id be happy... but it looks like 12 is about the best its gonna get from what people are saying even with me driving my usual 60 mph...so i either need to deal with more $$ for gas to get the nicer truck or spend more money to buy a nicer diesel ( maybe with a PS)...then there is always this chevy 6.5 thats both affordable and nice...

Why don't you just get yourself a small comuter car. In rough Na 7.3L just doesn't sound to appealing to me no matter matter the fuel mileage. I drove my truck (see sig.) to work as far as you and I was getting 13mpg. I have a Mercury Topaz now and I get in the mid 30's which is easier on the wallet. And don't forget that if your running a diesel fuel per gallon costs more plus oil changes and gen. maintance. I say your best option (if you don't need a truck to get to work) is to get a small car.

Thumbs up

'92 F150 4x4 SWB regular cab with 351 and 3.55 diff.

Best mileage on freeway: 15.8
Worst mileage ever: 10.2 (go pedal mashed all the time).

It's still worth it.

Yeah so save your truck for the weekend fun time. Pick up and small little car and the more you save in gas you can buy more toys with. Just an idea.
