Factory Slider or Solid Rear Glass?
What is your Preference?
The 1980-1982 factory slider is like the 1973 to 1979 ones, they are Brushed aluminum and surround the whole glass.
The 1983-1996 sliders are like the ones most people are familiar with. They have a narrow frame and are black.
Pros for slider:
Can open up the window for fresh air.
Nice if you have a camper-shell or a truck without a/c.
Any slider that I have ever seen is going to leak some even with good seals.
The Plastic latch has a limited life, even if it is treated right.
------------
Pros for solid Glass
Does not leak with good seals.
========
I needed to replace the slider in my truck and I got a real good deal on two windows.
The Factory slider has good seals, but the glass has a few major to moderate scratches.
The solid window has very minor, (hard to see) micro scratches in it.
Anyway what do you guys prefere? Any comments?
Thanks...

Yes and no.
Our ford dealer had a dealer option of the whole solid glass "rolling down" into a special box that fit behind the seat. This was about 10 years ago.
I remember Dennis (Mil1ion) talking about something simular in the 1973-1979 forum not too long ago.
And since the windows will swap 1973-1996 that may be an option...
I remember the one at the dealer and didnt really like it cause it took up some of the stowage space behind the seat. And I'm still looking for the dealer option stowage caddy for behind the seat.

I always loved my slider.
Believe it or not it can get hot up here enough to HAVE TO open the slider for cool air.
I also made the dealership install one on the topper that was on my truck when I bought it new.
Mine cab sliderfinally wore out the fuzzies in 2001 and just last summer I got a deal at a local swap meet on a Electric slider.

My original factory slider has never leaked. The plastic latches are still available from Ford and theyre cheap....go stock up! Just for clarification, My '83 factory unit had a bright metal trim that is inserted in the rubber seal. Over the years it became rusty and unsightly, so I had a glass shop replace the trim band. He said they only offered black as a replacement. I'm just as glad. The black has held up fine.
I'd say once you go "slider", you never go back!

I have to disagree, I've had both, and i think that the sliders leak, maybe not much, but when it's 20 below, that little bit of cold is a real pain. I do however have a thing for the earlier, aluminum framed glass. still, i think its a leak, and i've known too many people have their stereos grabbed because of easy access...

MY factory slider leaks. Im trying to plug it, but Im not having much luck.
One BIG down side to the slider is they can be open from the outside! (or mine can) Sunday I locked my keys in my truck and easily popped the slider open using a pocket knife!
Unfourtunatley i had wire wrapped around the latch keeping the windows shut and had to break the vent window to get in

I prefer the slider. I have one in my 86, but it looks like an aftermarket one; it's got a metal latch with a black aluminum frame. It's pretty tough to open the latch, but it looks like someone at least tried before I got the truck...
I agree with Steve, they'll find a way in if they want to. Also not all criminals know about sliders. Someone tried to steal my cousin's radio out of his Chevy. The latch on the slider is broke, so all you have to do is slide it open. They broke the side window, then couldn't get the radio out and busted the dash and radio all up... Bunch of savages.... Also, there was a tool box in the back with all the tools needed to take the radio out. They left that; it was probably worth more then the radio...

The 1980 to 1982's sliders (Just like the 1973 to 1979 style) use the standard rubber gasket that does not accept the trim molding. I guess they figured the aluminum was shiney enough.
