List the axle code here from the VIN plate. All you wish to know can be decoded. Is your truck an F250 HD? How many lug wheels...5 or 8?

If it's 5, it's an 8.8.

the 89 F250 will have a sterling 10.25 rear axle.
the gvw will determine whether it is a semi floater or full floater.

Not necessarily, Sir.

The 1980/89 F250's with WDR (non locking ) & WFL (locking) use the 8.8 axle. This F250 has 5 lug wheels. While Ford doesn't call it that, this is basically a LD Light Duty F250.

Only the 1985 and later F250 HD's (Heavy Duty) offered the Semi Float 10.25 Sterling.

And some others use Dana 60's, Ford 61-1 full floaters; and Dana 70's.

OK bill, i just learned something new.
while i knew that in 89 the 150 had the 5 lug 8.8,
i never saw a 250 with a 5 lug 8.8. only the 8 lug 10.25.

NO, they did not.

Look in the 1980/89 Ford Light Parts Catalog...would you like me to give you the exact page number? Here it is: Section 40, Page 9 (fiche 09-45)

Like I said, there ARE SEVERAL DISTINCT F250's made in the 1980's.

The Heavy Duty (Ford's term) F250's were introduced in 1985 along with the Sterling Axle.

Other F250's also used Dana 60/70 and Ford 61-1.

The Light Duty F250's in the 1980's used the 8.8's. You may have never seen one, but considering what I did for 35 years, I've seen plenty. I'm using the exact same truck parts catalogs every Ford dealer in the world is using.

Go down to your local Ford dealer, and ask to see the Rear Axle Application Chart for 1980/89. Then you can see with your own eyes all the correct information.

See my signiture below. There are 1000's of people on FTE asking parts/VIN questions. With 1800 posts in three months, I've answered more than one.

your front axle will be either a Dana 44 ifs, or a Dana 50 ifs. the easiest way to tell the difference between the 44 and 50 is the size of the locking hubs. the 44's hubs are a little smaller than the mounting flange. the 50's hubs are the same size as the flange. and they are not interchangeable. here are a few pics so you can see what i am talking about. this first one is a 89 F250 with a Dana 44

and this is a 89 F250 with a Dana 50
