ready for first oil change

Guys,
Good day to all!

Got back in a pick up after being away for all too long, things have gotten way nice in pipck ups.
I have an 07 Super Crew short bed. I am comimg up on 1100 miles and I can't or won't wait any longer I am gonna change the oil in my truck. So like everybody else I went on line to find my best deal on oil and filters, here I came up short on the oil.....found filters 3.95- 4.48.
While slumming through our newest Wally world I went through the auto dept just to check...I knew they carried fram and some store brands but I figured what the heck I'll check them out.
To my suprise Motorcraft on the shelf and 3.28 a piece. They also had the 5W20 blend on the shelf at 10.and some change for 5 qts, not bad....As soon as the weather clears and things dry out, I getting rid of the break in oil...I did check it the other day....and it was fairly clean...
I can't wait to see how much stuff is floating around in the bottom fo the oil change pan.....which reminds me I need a new one....this 5.4 motor holds 7 qts of oil....and if there are more D.I.Y. guys out there there are at least 2-3 other brands of oil in the 5W20 range.....

You can't go wrong with the Motorcraft oil. It is a great price and a great product. Just to let you know I have read stories on here about the factory oil filter. It will be hard to get off. Good luck!

You are changing oil long before you need to do it. The Motorcraft oil and filter is the best choice for your truck. since the factory filter is difficult to remove, why don't you have the dealer do the first oil change. I did and the little bit extra I spent was worth it to avoid the aggravation of the initial removal.

There is no 'break-in oil'. It's the standard oil and should go the distance before being changed to allow the engine to properly break in. Check with your dealer - most of the time they'll do the first change free. You'll notice in the manual there is no recommendation to change the oil before the full interval. If your oil has become very dark in 1100 miles, there are problems. I have just 650 on mine so far (4.2L) and it's still so transparent I can hardly see it on the stick.

I'm always amazed at the number of people who think your wasting your time and money for changing oil/filter early or often. The purpose to an early first change is to remove any left over particles from the casting or machining processes. They are there and it's better to be sure they are removed then to wait for the 5K or what ever the first oil change mileage is.

Will say this much. Going to the dealer for the first change isn't such a bad idea. Getting the factory filter off can be a real hassle. If you do it yourself, I'd suggest going out and buying a cup or socket type wrench specifically designed for the 820-s filter. The few bucks you spend on that will give you peach of mind... Turst me. My 07 filter change was a royal pain without this tool....

Good luck!

I've always changed the filter at the first 500 miles; oil/filter at 1,000; then again at 2,000 or 2,500 when I switch to synthetic (Mobil 1) in the last 7 or 8 new vehicles, which have been a 4.6 ('94 T-Bird) or 5.4's (Expy's and a Nav) and the Duratec V-6 in my wife's '05 Freestyle. Maybe I'm just set in my ways, but, I feel better doing that.

Speaking of filters, I can't imagine getting AT the filter is any worse on a P'up than on my latest Expedition (you can SEE it, but, getting ON it is another matter altogether), so, I've gone to the K&N HP2010 filter - they have a 1" nut-like thingy on the end of the case, so you can get a socket on there and turn it off. Not cheap, around $10 each at Summit, but, I figure I'm saving that much in skin, band-aids and iodine each time.

I got a oil filter cap at Advance Auto, it cost less than $5.00. Like SVT2205 said, the factory filter is hard to get off without it. It says it fits the Ford filter and it is fluted. You cannot get a oil filter wrench on the it and the oil filter caps with corners slip, don't ask me how I know. I used an extension and a swivel to get on the filter and you have to lean into it and was only able to get it to move an 1/8 turn at first. I also use the Motorcraft oil and filter and change them at about 3000 miles. I have a 06 XLT SCAB 4x2 with a 5.4. 6800 miles and I'm extremely happy with it.

You would'nt by chance know what the part number is to that wrench you bought? I am going to get me one. Also would anyone know the size of the 820 filter for the F150. I see different sizes for the wrenches i.e.,65mm, 74m,77mm and 93mm would one is the one for the 820?

I went out and checked. The one I bought at Advance Auto Parts is an
AmPro. Inside it has a 93 over a 36. If I remember the card it was on called it a fluted cap and is fits only Ford factory filters and lists the ML-820s filter. It cost less than $5.00.

Here's an older thread about this same topic. The size is a 93mm 36 flute filter wrench cap.
