Ignition switch recall

There was a thread where this was discussed some months ago and I can't find it anymore (I think it may have been discussed under F150, but Aerostar applied). Anyway there was a recall on my '92 Aerostar ignition switch. I threw it away because I had had the ignition switch replaced when the key would not turn anymore. Then someone said it involved not only the switch, but also the plastic wiring connector for the switch. I am trying to determine if any fire hazard remains. Okay, hasn't burned up yet in 118,000 miles, but sure would hate to lose this van. Would the aftermarket (not done at a Ford dealer) switch have been improved, or should I have it inspected. Is it really just the switch or also the connector? We are talking about where the key goes in, right, or is it a switch under the hood?

Thanks

Paul,

I believe it was the actual switch near the base of the steering column. Mine is a 1990, and was inspected during the recall, but not replaced. So not all of them had whatever problem is was that caused short circuits in the switch.

I looked it up and see that this is well beyond the key lock part of the switch. Anyway it says,

"The affected vehicles were produced with a higher than specified electrical load through an accessory power circuit that connects to the ignition switch..... The operater may be forewarned by a smoke odor or a popping noise from the steering column. Upon turning the key off, the short is eliminated."

My question: Is this short only possible with the key in the accessory position? If so, no problem as I never use accessory on this van. Or is it possible in any key position, but off?

Thanks xlt4wd90:
Went into the Ford garage last Tues and they took the van for about half an hour, came back and said they would have to order the parts. I went back yesterday and they did the repair in 45 minutes.

Was the recall still in effect?

At least the problem is now resolved.
