Thumbs up New truck in the driveway...WOW!!!

Well we made it home. Flew out of DFW to Moline, IL, quick trip over to Davenport, IA, and took delivery of the new 06 truck. Steve Jacobs (salesman) pulled the truck out of the shop to the front of the dealership. Looked just like in the photos that Steve sent. Did a quick walk around, opened the door and looked inside, went back inside wrote the check, did the paperwork, loaded our luggage and took off. When we landed in Moline the temp was a balmy 4 degrees with a wind chill of -16 with blowing snow. We couldn't head back to Texas fast enough.
The V-10 is an amazing engine. Plenty of smooth power, torque and a very unique sound. The 6-speed manual, has taken a little getting used to. It does shift like a truck not a car. Takes awhile to learn what shift pattern to use for the traffic or enviroment you are in. Easiest pattern seems to be 2nd to 4th to O/D. I did learn to move my leg over when shifting into Reverse after only a few bruising shifter slams into the knee cap hits.
With about 600 miles on the truck while cruising at 70 MPH the truck bucked, sped up, slowed down, the tach jumped and dropped then the truck dropped out of cruise. The ABS light came on and stayed on. I pulled over in the next rest area and check the brake fluid level which was fine. Called my Ford Service Advisor in Dallas, his best guess was a wheel sensor gone bad, so we continued back down the road with no problems.
Being used to automatic transmissions made arriving in Dallas rush hours traffic a little taxing after 2 1/2 hours with the manual transmission. However the clutch is very easy on the leg and knees as it works with very little effort.
MPG began at 12.3 mpg which was with various speeds some stop and start break in miles and very cold weather and snow. Our highest MPG was 14.3. This was from Kansas City to Dallas using for the most part the cruise control set between 70 and 78 MPH. The temps were still cold with snow and rail, so the only thing I can figure for the increase in MPG was that after staying the night at Harrah's Casino in KC, our pockets were much lighter thus reducing the payload on the truck.
All in all, a GREAT TRUCK with GREAT V-10 POWER.
Thanks for all your assistance and feedback,
Jon

Over my period of lurking here on the V-10 forum, I always noticed how owners would speak of how the engine really woke up around 150 to 200 hours or somewhere near 7,500 miles. On the way home, when I would accelerate to pass a truck or such, I kept thinking how much waking up will this thing have? Even as a new tight motor it is very impressive. It had 30 mile on it when I drove it off the lot, and now has just a hair under 1K miles on the odometer.

Driving the new truck off the lot did have one embarrassing moment. It was cold, darn cold, and I knew I was going to buy the truck so I did not do a test drive. So after all the paperwork and transfer of luggage into the new truck. As everyone was watching the crazy Texan who flew almost a 1,000 miles to buy a cheap truck drive off.......Well, I let the clutch out and it jumped forward, did a little hop, and died, not once but twice.
The gear selection on the manual transmission is very close and seems I was in third gear rather than 1st gear.
I will post some photos as soon as I get the truck washed, I hope later today.

You've got me beat on distance. Two weeks ago I drove from SE Iowa (an hour SW of Davenport!) 300 miles to Southern Michigan to pick up my 2004 F250 CC SB V10 2wd. You're right about the V10, it's awesome. The truck had just over 27,000 miles on it and I got over 16 MPG on the Interstate. My daily drive is very short, so my MPG is around 13, but with few miles to drive, it doesn't make my smile fade! Congratulations on your purchase- enjoy! BTW, what dealership did you buy from? Just curious...

Ha! Don't be embarassed.... I took mine in a year ago for a warranty problem. When I picked it up a youngster in the service area went back to drive it out. He had to do this, something about their insurance. But he killed it four times and only travelled a distance of ten feet, so I went back anyway and put him out of his misery.....

I purchased it at River City Ford. The salesman was Steve Jacobs. They were easy to work with and had everything ready to go at the dealership. Steve came out to pick us up at the Moline International Airport. Great airport by the way, nice, shiney and new. Looked to have somewhere around 12 gates and we were the only plane making use of the place. Made for fast baggage claim no like back here at Dallas Ft Worth International.
Would have liked to take the time to do a little site seeing around the Quad Cities (I was born in Moline, many years ago) but, dog gone it was cold and windy. The wife wanted to stop and see the Bridges of Madison County on the way home in Iowa. After a quick stop at a rest area and feeling the bite of the wind chill, we decieded it would make for a nice RV trip later in the year. Same thing on West Branch and the HH Library.

Jonrjen,

You are missing a 2004 F-350 in your line up. Regardless, Congrats.

jonrjen -- Congrats on your NEW SD V10!!! It takes a certain person to go to those extremes to pick-up his new truck. Way to go!

I am just one of those kind of guys too! I found my SD back in Nov. '05 (see sig and gallery) I wanted but it was in Fort Worth, TX. Flew out on a Thursday...and drove it home Saturday. Loved every minute of it!

OBTW: Did you ever get your ABS issue checked?

The ABS light and code cleared itself about 5 miles from the house. I figure it was either a build up of ice and snow in and about the wheels causing a reading error and Texas temps caused the ice to melt. Or one of the big pot holes on our back roads made the part reading the error to fall off. But either way no problems since.
