Talking How well will this combo tow?

Vehicle: 1978 E-250 Quadravan 4x4
Motor: Ford crate G460
10.5:1, dual plane, SCJ aluminum heads (72cc), msd
Barry Grant 750 CFM vacuum secondaries

Cam: Lunati 00096
214/224 @ .050, advertised 280/290

C6, Saturday night special converter (~1800 stall), 3.73, 33x12.50's

Towing ~7k lb's

Should I buy a Gran Torino to put the heads in and replace with some bigger chambered iron?

I was having trouble towing 3k before cam change - mismatched with converter (knocking), but also discovered sticky calipers. Haven't completely reassembed it yet to try.

Fire away!!!

yup to much cam!! OR you can run lower gear like some 4:56's and get the motor up in its rpm range better or smaller tires

and if you try to run a more sensible towing cam in it you would have to get some heads with bigger chambers because 10.5-1 is too much compression for pump gas without a big cam to bleed it off

Question gear change

if I go 4.56 gears should it pull reasonably in the mid-range with no other mods?

the lunati is 40 degrees shorter than the original cam (@ 0.050), so what's too much cam?

I am at the beginning of the learning curve on this stuff, obviously.

Thanks!

I disagree on the cam. BUT, it is WAY too much compression! I run a Lunati voodoo with 213/219 at .50 , 535/540 lift. His cam has a little more exhaust duration but range is from 1500 to 5000. I tow with the Voodoo cam but run 8.6 to 1 compression....

Cam is fine. Compression may be a problem, but you'll definitely need to run premium. Where is your intake centerline? If I were you, I'd install it at 106. You could even try retarding it a touch to bleed off some low speed cylinder pressure to prevent detonation. I would have stuck with the stock stall converter, as that combo will likely flash stall a stocker to over 2K.

Overall, I bet the combo runs darn good. Let us know.
