Talking muffler or no muffler?

I always see these psd trucks blowing black smoke.Mine doesn't do it.I was wondering if it is because I still have the muffler on my truck.I have the banks pipe .If I remove the muffler will I gain any HP or MPG? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

They at least don't check them for cats anyway. I've always thought a little back pressure was good on a engine but that may be different for a deisel.

i fixed your post for ya Barry
and no muffler makes more power, cause there is less restriction, so the turbo can spool up faster.
but no muffler also makes for ticked off neighbors when you fire it up in the early morning hours.

for the puff of smoke, you will need to "juice the pump" a bit.

Don't care about the neighbors,LOL. How can I juice the pump up a bit? Is it adjustable? Can I do it or do I bring it to you? LOL

You'll need to "chip" it. I had a SCMT on mine, and the black smoke poured out of it. I took the cat and muffler of of mine, I don't know if it helped on the power...I took it off the same day I bought it.

your 99 is computer controlled, so you will need to put a programmer like the banks 6 gun or the bully dog in it to juice the pump.

knock the muffler and cat off, put a programmer on it, and you will swear someone poured jet fuel in it.
just save the pipes so you can put them back on for the next trip to the a hole station.
