power steering fliud in toyota box

Hi guys. In my `56 w/312 I have a `56 ford [eaton] power steering pump to be hooked up to an `80s toyota p/s box. Ford calls for type A automatic transmission fluid to be used in their p/s system. I have no idea what fluid toyota calls for in their p/s system.
Should I use type A? Should I use what Toyota calls for? Or is their a compromise?
You guys with this set-up, let me know what your sucessfully using.
Thanks. Gusso

Back in the '50's I don't think they made "power steering fluid". They do now and it comes in flavors accepted by all manufacturers (except Honda, as I recall). Seems like a safe bet.

Thanks, ALBUQ F-1. Your right about power steering fluid back in the `50s as I said in my post [automatic transmission fluid type A]. I guess as you said any flavor will be OK. I`m more concerned about using the wrong flavor in the old `56 eaton pump than the Toyota box. Thanks again. Gusso

On my 49 I'm running the GM pump from the 72 Caddy engine coupled to the Toyota box. I filled it full of Dexron II (I think, its so hard to remember now that its like going to Baskin Robbins to buy power steering fluid, tranny fluid, or antifreeze).

When you go to pick some up make sure you look over the counter and see what the "Flavor of the Month" is.....

....LOL...

Bobby Sounds like your memory is almost as bad as mine. On the Toyota p/s box is the pressure line the inlet closest to the frame? I saw it identified somewhere but since I have a definete case of memory overload I can`t remember where.

....UH....er.....

I can tell you, I just can't tell you right now....

It seems like the pressure side is the one closest to the frame but until I can get home this evening and look under the hood of the old truck I won't know for sure (it would appear that the brain cells holding that info have been knocked out of commission at some point...lol)

Hopefully someone will stumble along and verify it

yes, the pressure line is closest to the frame and is 16mm the outlet closest to the engine is the return line and the fitting is 17mm. The 16 mm fitting will fit sloppy into the 17mm port, but the 17mm fitting will not fit in the 16mm port.

Possibly due to a few too many frosty beverages I'll wager...
