:::F150 Towing Capabilities 4 Real:::

I see the new 2007 F150 is rated to tow 11,ooo lbs!!! While the 06 model was rated at 9500 lbs.......................is this for real??? Are these trucks actually capable of haulinf something as large as a small fifth wheel weighing somewhere arounf 6500 lbs?

The capacity all depends on the options, body style and wheelbase. The Ford website has a nice chart under towing guide with towing capacities and what is required to get to that level. To get to 10.5K it requires a 2wd regular cab 5.4 with 144" wb and 4:10 gears. All of the 5.4 powered F150s will tow over 6500lbs.

Just for example, my dad's 04 F150 supercrew 5.4 w/ 3.73 gears can tow 9,100 lbs.
He pulls his 6,000 lb camper just about every other week end, and never has any trouble. Just make sure what ever you pull has trailer brakes.

I am glad to read this. Any idea as to the rpms his unit is at when pulling this trailer?................and that aside...............what is an acceptable rpm for any engine pulling a trailer of this size??

Doing about 60 with overdrive off he is doing about 2,000 RPMs, and it drops about 300-400 rpms with overdrive, but that's only when it is completly flat ground, so it doesn't keep searching between overdrive and forth gear(what happens when it gets hilly, and searches for a gear which isn't good for the tranny).

I wouldn't flinch at 6500lbs if you've got trailer brakes. I have a friend that's towed 10,500lbs worth of skidsteer loader and trailer behind an '04 Super Crew 4x4 with a 4.6. I wouldn't recommend trying THAT, but he said it handled it surprisingly well.

I tow my loaded NRG toyhauler, which is 23 feet and probably weights around 10,000+ with bikes, water, propane, food, etc., 29 weekends a year (thats our season anyways, excluding playriding), without a single problem. Mind you we have to climb Cajon Pass out here is So Cal so yes, it's handles the hills. Plus, the truck has 3.73's, runs on 35's, with a 6" lift so it's not exactly aerodynamic.

I have a hard time believing that... I tow a jeep on an open trailer with 4.56's and 35's and its not fun. I have the 5.4 with an edge programmer.....

You must like to drive at the rev limiter? Cause your not cruising low rpm's!

If the trucks at 4000RPMs all the way up the grade, who cares. That's what the bngine does.

So what if the truck works hard, that's what they are made for. Chances are the truck will get traded in in 5-7 years anyway. Right after the warranty wears out, lol.

Actually, its around 4000RPM going up Cajon Pass doing about 45MPH. That's at it's worst point. Everywhere else I baby it while towing, usually not exceeding 3500RPM on accel, cruise around 2k-2.5k RPM.

acceptable rpms would be to keep the engine in its powerband

I tow over 7klbs with an 04 Lariat SCREW with the 5.4, 3:73LS diff., and trailer package. This configuration is stated to handle 9500lbs. The thruck handles this weight with no issue.
