URGENT question for Dave Sponaugle

Wanted to make sure you see (and hopefully answer) this right away Dave

3 -- 1.61 -- 1.53 -- 1.42
4 -- 1.00 -- 1.00 -- 1.00
5 -- 0.76 -- 0.77 -- 0.77
R -- 5.24 -- 4.66 -- 3.79

So as you can see, if you were looking for lower first gear ratios when you swap in a ZF5 to replace a T19, and you got the one with 4.14 gears, they are almost the same as a T 19 4.02.
You list the 3 different ratios for the S 5 47, but were all 3 of those available for the Diesel trucks, or only the one with the 4.14 1st gear?

So, the actual ratios are stamped on the side of the tranny - or on a plate on the side of the tranny? Not just a code that will tell you what model tranny it is - which would allow you to find out what the ratios are - but the actual ratios themselves?

I'm going to go look at (and probably buy) that ZF & TC tomorrow, so the more info you can give me the better, Dave - and the sooner the better too since I'll be heading out first thing in the AM. I'm hoping that the 3 hour time difference will be enough for you to have seen and answered this by the time I get ready to go tomorrow...

And BTW, $650 is a decent price for the tranny and transfer case together, isn't it?

I have seen all three ratios in diesel transmissions.
The S42 I have seen both ratios in diesel transmissions.
The ratios were stamped on the plate.

Going price for a ZF 5 with a warranty locally is about 1500 for the S 47 model.

The model number just tells you it is an S 42 or S 47, no change in the model number for the different gear ratios.

Well, this is a used one without a warranty, but it does come with the transfer case. I'm betting the one off my T-19 woudn't work with the ZF - so getting the one that came with it is kinda' important....

Right awwn - I gather the 1345 is the more desireable of the two from what Mr.Bob said in the other thread....

The 1345 has done a good job for me, I have only broken it once when I split the case pulling a BIG load up a BIG hill. That is not bad for 20+ years of use in my book.

I tore the planetary gear out of my 1345, but I used to wheel the crap out of my truck in my younger days. It was $100 used from a local tranny parts shop, in good condition. Took us 3 times dropping tranny and t-case to find this problem though.

If you're asking me - just fine, I went and got it yesterday. Just have to find the time to do the conversion.

It is an S 5 47 - the strong one
Unfortunately it didn't have the ratios stamped on the side plate as I expected. I haven't taken the time to put it in 1st and count the in/out revolutions. Figured it didn't matter too much - at $650 with the t-case, I was buying it regardless.

Probably replace the input shaft bearing, mate it up to the spare t-case and put it up for sale. You interested?

Yep, the one thing I don't like about my truck is that it is an auto.

Well, I can't say exactly when it will be available, just that it will be sometime this summer. But I'll make you a deal on it if you want to wait until then...
