Ranchero tranny question
I have a 74 with a 302 and c-4 currently, but am getting a 400 w/ c-6 out of a monsterous late 70's ford 1 ton truck in a few weeks, i would like to use my c-4 but due to bolt pattern differences i cant do that, but was wondering if someone knew if they were close to the same lenth and perhaps same spline numbers, it would be very hard to have to find another driveshaft for this car. also if i would need another driveshaft does anyone know of other cars that would use the same driveshaft as the 72-76 ranchero(other than the torino, and wagons of course, something plentiful)? Any help is greatly appreciated

Well - I suspect that the C6 is longer so you would at least need to get a shorter driveshaft. Your best bet is to call a transmission shop. The splines don't matter that much - if the C4 and C6 differ in number of splines then you would only need a new yolk for that end, plus have the driveshaft shortened. Or - call a local boneyard and tell them what you need. There should still be a fair number of donor vehicles out there - just a matter of figuring out which vehicles had the right length...

there is a bellhousing to put a C4 behind a big-block, which is the one you need for your 400. i have one, which i got on ebay. they aren't exactly RARE, but they're definately not "common"... i would be surprised if more than 2 weeks went by without one being for sale on there. i saw 2 at once about a month ago.
a strong C6 is cheaper & easier to build, but heavier and more power is lost internally compared to a C4.
