What kind of penetrating oil have you found works the best? I've tried the 3M stuff and its not that great, just wondering if it really is worth it to use penetrant. I usually just hit it with the heat and a breaker bar.
i have found P.B. Blaster to be without a doubt the best i have ever used.

PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, et al. Sometimes a torch works because you heat the bolt or the area around the bolt and the size change due to heat breaks the crud inside (and bakes it to a crumbly mess, which is good).
After using penetrating oil, PB blaster, liquid wrench, brake fluid, mystery oil, and the fastener is still stuck tight I usually use the Candle Trick and it has not failed me yet.
Candle Trick!!!
Hasn't failed me either. I impress the h-e-double hockey sticks out of my students almost every year loosening frozen nuts or bolts on their engines.

For penetrating oil I like the PB Blaster, except for the fact that it is by far the worst smelling penetrating oil out there, you'll smell like it all day. I also have used a penetrating oil that is made by BG, got it at a dealer I used to work at, I think it's better than the PB even, but not sure of how to get my hands on it locally. Sometimes heating things up IS the only thing that will do it though.

Stuff out of a bottle is so handy that I will try it before I reach for the torch and candle. The funny thing is it is so easy to do and not a lot of heat is involved. Wax melts before water boils so it does not take a lot of heat. Some nuts have come off so easy it seemed like they could have been removed by hand (with gloves of course). The candle trick is great for those radius arm bushing bolts.

Haven't had a chance to try the candle trick, so I can't compare to that, but my two personal favorites:
Mopar Penatrating lube, available only to Chrysler techs and their friends
Dychem red dye penetrant for checking welds. This stuff is in a bottle meant to be swabbed onto welds to check for cracks. This stuff works so well, most of the time it won't stay in the bottle.

So does the candle trick work good on 15yr old exhaust manifold bolts on an explorer?
Yep, it works on everything generally. All you need is a candle and a propane torch. Like others have said it doesn't take much heat. The only "trick" is to heat the parts first, pull the flame away, then dab the candle in, then remove the candle, then heat again and repeat as necessary. YOu don't want to heat the candle directly with the propane torch as that reduces the amount of wax that gets wicked into the threads, and the candle disappears quickly.

I suppose, the Mopar guys gotta have a good way to get all the rusty bolts out for warranty work.
