Open door light

My '04 Excursion door open light is intermittently coming on and not going off. It has good days and bad days... It will turn on while driving without a door being open and when it turns on we can open and shut all doors and it doesn't shut it off. Sometimes it will turn on and off several times in a row while driving. Seems like an intermittent connection or switch however the indicator doesn't tell me which door is open it's just an all or nothing light. When the lights on and I stop and shutoff the truck either front door will deactivate the ignition delay indicating to me that the door switches in the front doors are working.

Anyway I was trying to locate the switches in the doors and I'm wondering anybody knows where they are? or has anybody had a similar problem?

TIA

I've heard of this but not experienced it myself. Seems like one solution was to shoot some WD40 into the area where the door open switch is. Just soak it up good and it should free up the switch to move back into the open position.

I hade this problem on my F350 it will drive you nuts if you let it. The WD-40 fixed it for now(been about six months). good luck.

The real trick is to figure out what door it is that is causeing the problem. I found my own trick to that but it takes time. The batery saver will eventually kick the lights off, therby ignoreing the so called open door. What you have to do is at this point open doors, one at a time. If the lights come back on then you can eliminate that door as the problem one. Then start the process all over again. But what i would suggest is to start with the tailgat glass door first. That one seems to be a common problem. ONce you figure out what door it is then you can try to clean/lubricate the switch or do like i did just unplug it and forget about it till you want to pay for a new one.

here is a link from the last time the same question was asked:

Hello all, Has any one found out how to shut off the lights when the back gates are open? I like to take my kids to the drive in and they sit in the back with the gates open, but the running board lights are on, any way to shut those off??

Thanks all! That answered all my questions... I'll try cleaning and WD-40 and then disconnect or replace if that doesn't do it.

mikadad you could always pull the fuse? the one that runs your power windows is the same one? it should be a 10a fuse i used to pull it until i figured out the back tailgate switches or if you just wait it out it will shut off as long as you do not open any doors.

From what i can tell there is no switch on the back swing doors, only on the lift tailgate. but then again i can not get my left rear door to open.
