Transmission Whine

Okay, so here's the deal. I just got my 78 F150 Ranger Lariat last week. (pics in gallery) First truck I've ever owned. I don't know a lot about trucks or engines - a little about aircraft engines becasue I'm a pilot - and I know a pistion engine is a piston engine - put the planes I flew didn't come with a transmission...:-)

The Lariat is in fantastic shape. The only things I know right now that need attention are an accelerator pump and an incessant transmission whine.

The whine sounds like a turbine spooling up ... or .... down. The whine occurs mostly in the lower gears and usually stops when I let up on the accelerator. The guy I bought it from said it's had that whine ever since he's had it. He's a Ford mechanic and re-built the 351 on it. I did a little research and is it possibly a gearbox issue?

Can anyone enlighten me on this type of whine and what needs to be done to fix it. Or ... is it just a live with it annoying tick that comes with older trucks?

Thanks guys and any gals out there...:-)

Tamara

You don't say whether it is an auto or manual. It could also be the rear diff.

Do you hear the whine....

when stopped or in netural? If you hear it only while driving, you might want to check your rear end fluid. I just replaced my whiney, worn syncros 5 speed which masked the whine that went to a chuckle noise in the rear end. The trans would whine above 30 mph and the rear end did the whine below 30 mph. Now I have a whole new drivetrain and the silence is defening.......chris3
