Need Help With ESOF

Digging up a really old post. I hope someone will answer.
Having lack of 4x4 shift capabilities. Have replaced the switch and the transfer case motor. Im thinking it has to be the GEM box as described on here.
Where is the box? I looked inside the glove box and it could be there, but it would be a real PIA to get out, and there are a couple boxes in there, so I want to be sure.
Also, if I do replace the box, will I need to re-program anything? My '03 Excursion has keyless entry.
thank you for all your help.

If I recall. it was behind the glove box. It is the GEM module. Very easy to access.
1 - Open the glove box.
2 - Remove everything from the glove box.
3 - Squeeze the back of the glove box inward to permit the stops on the back of the box to pass through the opening for the glove box. It should be pretty clear how to do this when you open the glove box.
4 - The box should now be hanging down below the dash and you should now have ready access to what is behind the glove box including the GEM you need to replace.
5 - There are three or four screws that hold in the GEM (It's been a while and I don't recall exactly how many. Remove them and undo the plug(s). I do seem to recall that one of the screws was a little bit of a challenge to re-install but if was able to do it, I'm sure you have the skill set to do it..
6 - The module is rather easy to open up and check. Open it and see if the board is corroded. If so, I suspect this is your problem. If not, you're going to have to do some digging.
I seem to recall the cost was between $100.00 and $200.00. I don't recall if I had to provide the VIN number to get the right one. I think theyn are al the same but you should verify before you buy one.
I think mine was getting water in it from condensation dripping from the air ducts back behind the glove box. No leaks in the windshield that I was aware of.
Hope this helps.

Not sure exactly what socket that is but if you look underneath you should see an orange/l blue wire.. you need to short that to ground for a second or two, you'll hear it if the engine is off. Make sure both relays are still connected. I just did this the other day.
Awesome. Thank you. I'll try it tomorrow night (hopefully).
