Mechanical mileage readout quit....

Hey guys, my mileage readout quit working as well as the trip meter. The readout is not the electronic kind, it is the old school kind where the numbers actually flip. The needle to tell you how fast you are going still works, so I am going to guess that its not the cable or the gear in the transmission. It worked up until I pumped gas and reset my trip meter and now it is stuck where it was when I reset it at: 209,07X right between the 5 and 6. If I wasnt so **** and didnt change my oil and stuff it wouldnt matter to me but it is eating me to no end. Anyone ever had this happen? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried pushing the trip reset button several times? It may unstick it.

Sounds like something must have broken in the odometer gears or something then. Bummer.

I've never opened a ford cluster, so I don't know if it's similar to a chevy cavalier from 1993 or not. but i did fix my friends aformentioned cavalier with a small screw. The pin holding the gear in place went MIA, so I took a real small wood screw, and screwed it in where the pin went and fixed it. maybe this'll help you figure out a fix or a way to jerry-rig it back together..

good luck

Give this guy a call. I went by his shop yesterday for some help on a Volvo odometer.

Thanks guys. It does sound like an issue with a gear being stripped or broken. NASA I will give your guy a ring tommorrow. Anyone know how hard it would be to change one of those things?

Okay, FIXED. In order to order the piece from that website NASA, I would have to take it apart, to see what piece was broke. He told me how to do it, and I tried but decided that it wasnt worth it breaking something and having to buy another one. I went to a junkyard and bought one for $50. 30 minutes later it was installed, including the sticker stating previous mileage to put on door jamb as per DMV. Too bad too, the one I bought only has 64,000 miles on it too. I did take the old one apart to see what the problem was, and it ended up being the worm gear, but to get to the worm gear I had to completely destroy the cluster.
