Question When did ford stop making the heavier thicker 302 block?

I have a 1977 ford truck with a 302. I have been told the earlier blocks were more sturdy than the newer 5.0 blocks. What year did the newer cheaper 5.0 blocks start? I thought maybe 72 but I wasn't for sure. Ever since I got this truck I have been wandering if it has the thicker block so later on if I wanted to go crazy and build a stroker it would be a good foundation.

The '69 mexican blocks are prized for thier heavy castings... enough to put 4bolt mains on apparently. But even the late model 5.0s are capable of supporting near 500hp with the right internal parts obviously.

My 70 Mustang came stock with a mexican block. It will be stamped in the lifter galley "Hecho en Mexico", not sure if they stopped in 70 or not. They had a higher nickle content to them which made them stronger. They are supposed to be about 10 lbs heavier.

Ah well, even though my 77's not as strong as the 72 and earlier engines it still runs good. I Always try to look on the bright side of things.

The heavier blocks were cast up to 1974(D4 casting prefix). Hope this helps.
