Tuner/Chip thoughts for a V10

I just bought a 2001 F250 4wd with a V10 and noticed that the Speedometer was off. The wife was behind me in our 03 Excursion (V10 also) and said that I was off by 5 MPH. I checked the Tires and sure enough theyre 285s and not 265s like the X ( My stupidity for not looking earlier). Those tires are brand spanking new so replacement is not an option at this time, so My question is, since I have 2 V10s, any thoughts on a Tuner of some sorts that can be used by both, and one that will compensate for the larger tires on the F250? Thanks

From what I've heard there isn't any tuner that allows 2 vehicle use. And since they are different vehicle platforms they are not going to respond the same with a canned tune. I'd recommend trying Troyer's Custom Tuning. Have hear very good things about his tuning on V10's.

Or go to the dealership and get the speedometer recalibrated, without performace gains.

Thanks. I didn't think about just getting the speedo re-calibrated. Is there really any help in the MPG area that offsets the cost of the tuner?

Some people will get 1-2 gain, but it can be dissolved by your right foot. I'd suggest just calling Troyer Performance and talking to them directly. That will be your best way of getting all the exact answers you need in a timely matter. To make tunes really work it's best to run premium fuel, but you can get 87, 89 tunes as well, to improve shifting performance and throttle response. Just call Troyer Performace, that's the absolute best way to get your questions answered. If I had 4 franklins I'd really get his tuning.

Unfortunately I wouldn't expect too much in the way of performance gains on gas like you would a diesel if you were to get a tuner, rather it's "canned" or custom. As far as mileage goes, that almost always depends exclusively on your right food and the surrounding terrain that your driving in.

Im pretty easy on the throttle, but I do pull a 36' travel tralier once in awhile and any little bit helps, but if the cost outweighs the gain then it really doesnt make any sense to spend the extra. Already having an Excursion with the V10 Im used to the low MPG. Thanks

I would say, the max gain would be around an additional 20-30 horsepower and that might be a little too liberal on it. If it was a diesel then any "canned" tuner would have giving you about that much in their lowest setting(which coincidently would be the setting that you would be towing in). To see really big horsepower changes your goin to have to be more radical in your performance mods(i.e. supercharger). Now a tuner and freeing up your exhaust could very will give you the extra umph your seeking, but don't expect to up against a diesel truck that's like yours that is chipped. Horsepower wise, a v-10 isn't that much more then a diesel v-8 stock and the v-10 doesn't beat the v-8 diesel in torque(which this is the most importent thing to consider when towing) when they are stock.

Intakes & exhausts add very little to the new gas powered F250s as Ford did a pretty good job on both of them. My tuner provided the best bang for the buck. Hands down.

With 285's your speedo should be SPOT ON. They are on the slow side stock with 265's. All the Superdutys we have done with 285's and most 33's have been dead on with radar.

Actually, with our custom tuning those V10's pick up a LOT of power - typically in the area of 25 RWHP on 87 octane, and 40+ RWHP on premium gas - and the torque gains are very large for a gas engine as well, usually picking up anywhere from 50-70 lb/ft. of torque, depending on the octane level tuned for.

We provide a set of 3 different custom tunes, so that you can have everything form performance to towing tunes, and tunes for any level of octane.

It looks like some people just are not away of what can be done tuning-wise on gas engines, but what we provide makes everyone very happy, as we have specialized in custom tuning the F-series platform far longer than anyone else, 15_+ years now, and we know them extremely well.

The V10's for example, cannot even go open loop from the factory, and that severely limits power - just fixing that alone, which off the shelf tuners do not do, adds nice power.

It is also possible for us to do fuel mileage-style tunes to - but most people, when they can keep their foot out of the throttle, see as much mpg gain from our performance tunes and get more power when they need it - just FYI.

At any rate, for those with V10's or any other F-series, I think you;ll be very happy with our Troyer Performance custom tuning - we are very well known for our results, as we've been doing this so long, and we actually get called in to help manufacturers of all kinds of products, from shifters to intakes to exhaust to you name it on these vehicles, due to our expertise on this platform.

In fact, we just did the Webmaster's truck, installing a Roush supercharger and then custom tuning it - in some areas, just from our tuning *alone*, we gained as much as 155 RWHP & 200 RWTQ over the Roush tuning that came with that supercharger - it's all in a series of articles here on this web site.
I hope this brief info helps a bit, & please feel free to give us a cal at our number listed below, we'll be happy to help!
