Thinking of replacing the 6.9 with a cummins 24 valve

Don't hate me please.

I like the reliability of the 6.9, but I REALLY like the power of the Cummins 24 valve in my friends Dodge. I don't like Dodge, so I stumbled across the kit to install the Cummins in the Ford.

So, I'm asking you to talk me out of it, or tell me I'm not crazy.

I do like my 6.9 and 7.3 motor's, but the inline 6 diesel is a proven work and power horse. All major truck Manaufactures use the inline 6 concept in all big trucks Pete, Mack, Volvo etc.

Good luck on your converstion hopefully you will post your prgress and results here.

Use a 12v cummins. No electrical computer crap to deal with and cheaper to get power out of.

fish, before I bought the truck I have now, the previous owner was in the process of installing a cummins. Long story short, I have the FordCummins Conversions transfer kit and instructions....I gave it a great deal of thought, but I won't be putting a Cummins in....so if you serious about putting one in, let me know & I'll save you some money!

So put the money you will spend doing the conversion into a turbo and rebuild for your 6.9.
They have potential for power as well.

You might be right Dave.

This way I can keep my IH sticker too, HA!

There is just something about that cummins. Maybe because it's new/newer. So, a rebuild and turbo might be a cool deal. I'm still thinking.

The nice thing about the 24v Cummins is that it makes all the power you needf right out of the box without having to mod it. Put a tuner on it, and hang on! You get the reliability and driveability of a nice electronic engine with the durability of an OBS Ford truck.

And with electronics come headaches. Suddenly unless you spend a boat load of money on test equipment you are trotting down to the shop for repairs and scans and all that stuff.

That also means that the cost of the motor is just the start, you will have a computer, sensors and wiring to contend with. Since that motor was not in an OBS Ford it will also have to be custom work.

My biggest thing about conversions like that is this, when I break something in the driveline there are thousands of old Fords in salvage yards and parts houses all over that stock the parts for them. If you break a motor mount, how long are you going to be down till you can get a replacement?
I have two complete sets of motor mounts for a 6.9 in my garage, but they will not get you back on the road with a Cummins. I also know there is not another Ford in town with a Cummins in it either, so there will not be any in the salvage yards or parts houses.

When my IDI is acting funny I just open the tool box filled with regular wrenches and use my head to fix it. Once a computer is involved that is no longer how it gets fixed.

When I was having motor trouble a couple years ago I considered a 94 thru 97 Power Stroke, but after thinking about it I fixed my 6.9 so it had more power than the 96 I was looking at had.

I run around with a 2003 24 valve Dodge, I will not say I can run all over it, but I will say he don't run all over me either. Since the V8 makes power different than an I6 does, there are places I run away from him just like there are places he runs away from me. But in the long haul we are rather even in power.

In the end it is you call, it's your truck.
But that is not something I would consider doing.
I have driven the Dodge/Cummins plenty.
I really like the six speed tranny.
I really like the Dodge parking brake.
I hate the way they ride and drive.
I don't really like the Cummins motor either, I am used to V8 power.

If I am going to buy a truck, it has more parts than a parking brake and transmission that I have to like.

When I read the title to this thread the first thought I had was "My Gawd, what PITA".
A few questions that popped into my mind:
How are you going to put together anything close to a realistic cost or time estiamte? For me, the time estimate would have to include custom fab time that you probably can't predict, do you do your own welding and machining? Do you have a second full size truck to run while this one is down? and then down for the inevidable "Tweeking"? Have you ever done a major conversion before? If not do you have a REAL good friend that will stick with you through it?
Man, if you can pull this one off I'd love to see the finished product, but I wouldn't want to have to pay for it. At the end of the day, it's a helluva project. Best of luck if you go forward.

No major fab work needed if you buy the kit from Ford-cummings.

It was just a thought I had after driving the cummins
