Steering gear 1960

Has anyone rebuilt steering gearbox on 1960 F100? Mine has a LOT of slack in it way more than can be adjusted. How big of a hassle is the job, or is worth the $600 parts suppliers want for rebuilt units? I have a shop manual with pics but the voice of experience speaks loud.
Thanks

Steering gear 1960

I rebuilt my 59 box and had only about $ 250 invested with all new bearings, bushings , worm gear, seal and gaskets. I dont think it was much of a hassle if you have access to a hydraulic press to replace the worm gear, and good measuring tools to set up the clearances for pre-load on the bearings.
