1959 Ford truck 292
Does anyone know the correct engine colors for 1959 ford truck 292 engine? I am ready to paint the engine, the valve covers are a medium ford blue and peeling right now. I would like to put the correct color on it. It may be blue or red? What color would the oil bath aircleaner be painted, and the block? I would love any help anyone might have. I have talked to numerous ford truck catolog people, like Dennis Carpenter, etc, they have been of no help even though they sell the different color engine paints!!!! Thanks Annie

Annie, In Paul g. McLaughlin's restoration guide "Ford Pickups 1957-67", they list the 1959 F-series 292 engine paint as follows: red, blue, black for block, black for accents. The book doesn't specifically list which parts are which color though. I used to have a 1959 F100 with a 292, and I now have a 1959 F250 4x4 with a 292, 17,500+ original miles (it was owned by fire dept.) so I'm guessing it's original. I know that the air cleaner is black, the valve covers are blue, and the intake is red, and the oil filler tube and cap are black. I will clean it up a little and look at the rest in the daytime for you. I hope I have been a help.

Hey thanks alot for your help kenny, My truck is also a 59 f100 4x4, custom cab, I had it shipped in from Texas to my home in NJ. It is truely amazing to see a truck this old with no rust or I should say no rot on it. It is pretty original also so I guess that is why the valve covers are blue. Are you sure about the manifold being red? I would love to see a pic of your truck. Annie

Hi Annie, My intake manifold is definately red (well, what little paint that is left on it), and I took a look at the rest in the daylight. This is what I have: My block is black, starter, generator, and all brackets are black, my waterpump must have been replaced at one time because it is unpainted, and my oil pan looks like it may have been black, but it's very hard to tell. Almost all the paint has worn off, and the few spots that look to be black paint may just be baked on grease or oil. I would love to show you pictures, but I don't have my own website. I can send them as attachments if you e-mail me direct at: Klear@eclipse.net I would love to see pictures of your truck also. My truck came from East Stroudsburg, PA last year. I live in N.J. too! (Piscataway) Take care

Hi Fordman, We kinda already established the correct color for the valve covers is blue, for the 59 truck 292, they are blue already and the truck is pretty original. The paint on manifold looks blue but not much of it is left to be completely sure. Kenny says his manifold is red and I did find a speck of red paint going up the oil filler tube, but I cant belive that would be the color scheem, so I think I will just go with ford medium blue and the block black and air cleaner black. I have a 59 f-100 4x4 with a 292 md engine. My dad was the original owner. the valve covers were ford blue, however on the inside of the valve covers was a residual red paint from the original red color of the valve cover. the block was alwas black and the intakes were also red.

I have a 1959 F100 Panel that was owned by a Fire Dept and it has under 16k orig miles.Original 292,2spd auto. This is all confusing me because my block, intake and heads are orangish red, valve covers and oil pan are silver, and everything else is pretty much black. But that may have something to do with it being a replacement motor installed in about `71 because of the Fire dept neglecting the orig motor.

Jim, That is very possible. The colors schemes changed slightly from year to year. The 292's in Cars had silver valve covers during 1959, even though they are the same engine. In 42 years time, It's getting harder to find engines that haven't been replaced or re-painted by previous owners. Sounds like you have a very nice truck there!
