53 f100 steering column removal
I just got back to working on my 53 and decided to put in power brakes and new column. Short of torching off the steering shaft, does the column and shaft separate from the gearbox? I am probably going to change the gearbox to power steering anyway, but I hate to ruin something if I don't have to.
Thanks, Dave

The worm gear is pressed on to the end of the shaft. You need to remove the box with the shaft unless you intend to scrap the whole thing, in which case you should just cut the shaft off at the box with a hack saw. Even if you keep the box, you can get new shafts with pressed on worm gears by themselves from So Cal F100's and others. The worm gear is usually the part that fails, as it is made out of a softer material than the secter gear that it engages. Most times, a replacement shaft will fix your old box up pretty good. Check out So Cal's ram assist power steering kits...pretty slick!

You can remove the box by 1st removing the wheel, then loosening the column clamp. Then remove the sector arm & the end plate from the box. After that the lower race & bearing come out & you can then remove the shaft & worm gear as a unit and remove the box.
