E series question

I use mostly E-series van for work with a box on the back. I was at a Ford dealer today and they said the 6.4 will not fit in the current E-series truck. It will have to be made at least 3" wider. My trucks are 7.3, and are a bit hard to work on. They said the 6.0 was worse to work on, and the 6.4 will be worse yet because of the size and emisions. Has anybody heard any of this? Maybe I should stick to the 7.3s.

Interesting, remains to be seen what Ford does, the diesel van and cutaway market has been good to them, I doubt they let GM have free reign in that segment.

The E-series has been the best looking van on the market for quite awhile now, but a re-design would be nice

Ford needs to come up with a tilt front clip or just tilt the cab. GM has them. If it (the 6.4) is harder to work on than the 7.3 or 6.0, they have to make it easier to get to. And if the 6.4 has more power, it will probably create more heat. Something else to deal with. And not by de-tuning it. finding a way to keep it cooler is the answer. We need the power. My vans carry a lot more weight than an F series.

No, the best looking van is the Dodge Sprinter.

The Sprinter is a good looking van, but it is made by Mercedes so Dodge can't have the credit. I think the Ford van is better looking than the Dodge or GM. But GM seems to have better body styles for the cutaway than Ford. And I saw a GM that had a front clip that tilted. It was on an ambulance. Ford has some catching up to do.

not so much to my liking, but having the extra height inside is nice for a work van

I'd have to think that working on a 6.4L inside a van is going to be a pain. If you're going to have to life the body off the superduty, it's just going to be that much more difficult to lift the body of a full size van. Yuck.

How does that all play out with the change to the 2007 emission standards? Have they already built all the 2007 diesel vans they are going to build? Or can they still build them as long as the engines were produced prior to Jan. 01-2007?

ford has emission credits that will allow them to do this.

I'm looking at replacing my E-150 this year with the E-350 and the 6.0L Diesel in it. I don't like the body styles of the GM vans and you can only pull a couple of jet ski's with the Sprinter. I'm glad that Ford is keeping the 6.0 in the vans for now personally. I'm wondering on how the 6.4 will play out. I use my van for work everyday and wouldn't be able to afford to keep it at the dealer while they tinker with the 6.4 and get all the bugs out of it.

The word on the street is that the Econolines will either get a massive overhaul to fit the 6.4 for 2009, or perhaps be fitted with the 4.5. Only time will tell.
