I have a '01 f-150 etended cab 4X4 with the 5.4 and another guy at work has a '00 chevy extended cab 4X4 with the 5.3. He thinks that he would take me in a race hand down, just wanted to know what some other guys thought. Both trucks are stock.
I think the 5.3 Chevy is a Dog. We had 1 here at work and it couldn't get out of it's own way. I rented a Ford with a 5.4, and while it was no speed demon, it was better than the 5.3. It also got better mileage.
I had a '04 5.3L 4x4 Silverado Z71 with 3.73 gears, and I now have an '06 5.4L 4x4 XLT SCrew with 3.73 gears.
Empty, the Chevy would definitely beat it in a drag race.
So would the '03 Hemi I had. (That is, if I could keep it out of the shop long enough to race someone.)
But I'm pretty sure with a 5000 lb. trailer behind each the Ford would beat the others hands down...
If the setup of the trucks were the same, I'd have to say the 5.3 would win the race with an empty load. Put some weight in the bed or pull a trailer and this is where the 5.4 has the advantage.
Heck, hook em up and see who pulls who. Trucks are meant more for brute force, not speed.
I raced my 2001 F150 4x4 5.4L ext. cab shortbox against my friend's 2001 GMC 4x4 5.3L ext. cab shortbox --- off the line we were fairly even to about 30 mph, then the GM pulled me till we hit the govenors, and then (about 2 lengths behind), I caught him and passed him only cause i governed a little faster. Racing from 60 mph side by side the GM would leave me everytime. But he did admit, that his was doggier with a trailer behind than mine was, but we never raced loaded.
