Question 4 FEET snow on roof

Any tips on how to get 4 feet of snow off of the roof.

I live in southern colorado about 7 miles west of Trinidad I Finaly stoped snowing. On the ground its 48" and looks like 2 or 3 feet on the roof.

I am going to make a Tee out of some 2x4's and drag some of it down

Sometimes it helps to get someone on the other side of the building to help by pulling on a rope. A long pole and a piece of 3/4" plywood makes a good snow blade.

What is the design load for a roof in your area? Are they designed for a 48" snow load?

They make roof rakes for snow. Do a google search for snow rakes. You could probably get a good idea from a few pics and fabricate your own.

Ladder and a snow scoop. Start at one end (over some support, like an end wall) and work your way across.

leave a few inches up there so you don't disturb the roofing material. Be careful around chimneys and be especially careful of electrical lines.

they make a thing for that... kind of like a rake, with a long telescopic handle you can reach up there pull the snow off.. saw them at home depot.

Anything with a long handle will do the trick. The real problem is how to do it without bringing a bunch of snow down on your head.

If the roof isn't too stteep, I'd just use a ladder to climb up there and very carefully shovel it off the centre portion of the roof. Then use a rake or soemthing to pull the rest down from below.

Take a few pictures. In a few years when you are talking about this at your x-mas gatherings, it never hurts to have evidence so you aren't called an exagerator!
Good luck!

If you are worried about the pile up around the base of the house when you do this.

Make sure you have a tarp stretched out on the ground first to pull the snow away when you're done..... In incruments

BTW <> sorry about dropping so much at your place..I intended it for the Illinois,Ohio,Vermont and other NE areas

Grab yer shovel and get busy. We have to do ours here two to three times a year. Like Fordzlla said, leave an inch or two. Saves on the roof and it acts like an insulator. Enjoy winter and take breaks. Good time for a heart attack. Spring is just around the corner, maybe.

Edited for my spelling errors.

To give you an idea of how much weight is up there. We filled a garbage can with snow. turned it upside down and cut a 1 cubic foot out of it. It weighed 22 pounds on a bathroom scale. Had light drizzle for a couple of hours that night and it was 57 pounds the next morning. Get a bucket and put some snow in it than weigh it. Figure the square feet of your roof and see if ya can sleep at night. It scared h*ll out of me.
