wish i knew computers so i could run 'em as fast as you guys. 'course shutting them down at night doubles my folding time. yes i'm paranoid about leaving them on.

leave it to me to mess with stuff. i was trying to dedicate each core to the task so i can run two at the same time and i lost a 40% completion on a 300 pt'r. oh well. now ill be running 2 at the same time and it will go pretty fast when im gone this weekend

being disabled i'm terrified of fires. that's why i shut down at night.. not to mention what i know of computers can be contained in a shot glass. i had web-tv until early 2005.
many thanks to you guys that are flying up the stats page. i tell Nancy every night what the team has done. i'll plod along in both of my teams, but you rocket folders are heros. i guess i'll have to get an expert in here to configure these dinosaurs for faster performance

Even then, I'm sure there's some extra performance you could extract from it. Heck, even when I build customer computers I optimize the memory timings. Not overvolt mind you, but I will optimize the timings as much as possible while remaining stable.

na, i think your doing great lenny. i wouldnt pay anyone to "configure" your pc. the more you do to them the more you have to babysit. im glad to help the fight. im also VERY competitive, so this is kinda a way for me to do both. i have all this processing power at my disposal so i just as well use it. and if i ever get my laptop fixed ill add it to the list. i hope to have 8 of them running by mid next week

rusty, the AMD setups benefit STRONGLY from tight memory timings. The IMC eliminates the FSB and cuts about 50ns off of the memory access times.

Intel is still using FSB, and memory timings are almost trivial.

a cas latency of 3 on an AMD socket 754 or newer, if tightened to 2.5 is a 16% improvement on memory timings. The FSB on intel can be up to 50ns, so a cas latency of the ram added to the fsb latency is nothing. 54ns vs 53ns? no big deal

So if you have an AMD machine with the integrated memory controller (K8 chips), then tight timings will really help performance.

you actually need thirty of them hooked up to their own electricity-generating treadmills that powers your computer, then no one will be able to touch you

I agree Carl! Ryan do this in the terms of the book "Computers For Dummies!"
Cause I got an AMD and I want it to be faster!

jim, did you have someone build it for you, or did you build it, or did you buy a prebuilt from a company? If it's a prebuilt, it's unlikely you have any access to memory settings, and even if you did, your valueram is already on its optimized timings.

You're telling me! Right now, I'm running 2GB Kingston Hyperx, 2-3-2-5, 1T, at 208MHz, with an Opteron 185 at 3125MHz (on air cooling too!). It helped out alot from the 2.5-3-3-7 I was running. I also optimized all the other memory timings in the bios, and believe it or not that helped!

I kind of wanted to upgrade to a C2D, but too rich for me. Or maybe I'm just lazy. I already had the Socket 939, and when I got it I figured I would upgrade at some point, and so I did (was using 3700+ San Diego core before). Should hold me out for a while anyway.

In terms of optimizing, you never know until you try. I had some Valueram for a different computer, and I was able to tighten the timings past spec by a modest amount.
