What happens is that instead of a small amount of computer capability being turned to a very highly complex task that can take a very long time - a LOT of ancillary PC'S work on parts of the problem, and contribute to the whole - so that a solution can be found faster.

By volunteering "computer time" on your own system, the process is speeded up that much more. If only a few do it, there is a bit of gain. But if a LOT OF PEOPLE join - it becomes the equivalent of a computer larger than any institution or individual research budget could possibly afford...

Quite possibly bigger than any single computer on earth...

That's how it helps.

I assume this wouldn't work with a computer on dial up, with only one phone line in the house... Hmmm

It works with dial up, thats what I have, it downloads a unit and your computer works on it in its spare time when its done it is uploaded and another one is downloaded. Downloads and uploads work in the background like auto updates

I don't know if mine is working or not. Did the MacOSX graphics download....Only took a few seconds....have an icon....BUT.....not sure how to install...or even if it's needed and clicked on the icon but just shows up in separate box with no prompt to enter a team name and/or member name.

I have no experience with the Mac version, but I'm sure someone in their forums would be very happy to help.

OK....never mind....it's working. Popped on the icon and the folding@home opened in upper toolbar.....clicked and checked status. Apparently, "I'm" working on the following protein:

P2124_lambda_5

Progress so far is 0.17%

Got my username and team number squared away too.......

Does this program have a screen saver mode like SETI? If so, you can set it to run in the background when you're using the computer and it will automatically switch to full blast when the screen saver kicks in. Gets a lot more work done that way.

PS; I'm in.
