Well, I made the plunge...

I'm going to install Linux OS into my Sony Vaio laptop.

I'm curoius to see what this OS is all about.

I'll still run XP Pro in the Dell, just in case.

All I have to do is wait for the discs to come in the mail, and BAM!

With my expertise in computers, I should have this working in..............two months; 3 tops.

What version/distro are you going to be using? I'd suggest the Mandriva or Fedora line. Fedora 5 has bugs out the yin-yang but it's stable. Mandriva is VERY nice. They are freely downloadable if you have a decent internet connection. Feel free to PM or email me with questions.

pfogle, my cousin burned them on CDs and is mailing them to me.

I think it's from Fedora/Redhat, but I'm not really sure.

Thanks, I will PM you if I have questions.

I think theres ways that you can run both on the same machine in case something happens that you dont know how to deal with, but im definitely not a computer person so I am most likely wrong.

I'm not either, but I think it's called partitioning.

Problem is if the hard drive fails, I think you lose everything.

I will run two hard drive and set them up to boot from either. I will also run the new OS on an older puter as I understand it is not as hungry for ram as MS.

pfogle, just found out it's Fedora 6.

arctic y block, I'll probably stick with two separate computers, since I don't have a second hard drive to install on the desktop, and the Sony is just collecting bird feathers.

I build computers as a hobby and for free to those who have kids and can't afford them. I get them donated to me when schools or people upgrade. I may have one for a desk top or tower that may work for you. I think I mite have a 1.5 gig but will have to do some digging to see. If you can use it you can have it for shipping. Would need the specs on your system. So e-mail me if ya think I can help. Same goes for the rest of ya. Just please don't take advantage of me.

I do appreciate the offer.

An update.

Well, it didn't work.

The CD/DVD drive on the laptop took a "you know what".

So now I'm thinking of getting an external DVD burner, for both the PC and laptop.

I was told Linux is a more stable system, or something like that.

Me personally, I'm just curious about it.
