4.6 to a 5.4?

My 97 F-150 has had some recent engine problems which leads me to looking at new engines. I want more power than I previously had with my 4.6 and I dont know how hard it would be to put a 5.4 in instead. Could I get some advice?

I would assume it would be fairly easy for an engine swap, considering the details of each motor. I say that because all fittings should be the same.

4.6 to 5.4 swap...

IT WILL COST you 4k esh maybe little less or MORE depending on...

how much you spend for the 5.4
is the 5.4 come with all its parts... intake/sencers.... a rebuilt isent pretty...

If you want to install a 5.4 inplace of your 4.6 you have to really want to because
most shops will not do this because they are scared and you need the tools and a
little help...

I payed 1900 for a used 5.4 with o most all its parts... 60k miles on it...
used my 4.6 air intake and MAF
used my 4.6 coils packs/wires
used my 4.6 computer
Payed to installed highflow cats with pipework for manafolds to bolt up $400
Payed for a 8bolt flywheel $40
Hoeses for fule line/Bolts/stuped stuff that broke $100-200

Plus i got new P/S pump and Water pump... not sure of prices ... forgot

Man if it wasent for my buddy who had all the tools... I would have naver got this
done by my self....

You have to use the wire harness off of the 4.6 and put it on the 5.4 and do a little
cut and wire for some sencers that are longer away then on the 4.6 and the knock
sencer has to be rewired because both the P/I 5.4 and none P/I 5.4 both to be wired
for that issue.

You only need the engine, and to make a few minor mods.
The exhaust will need to be refitted due to the taller deck block, and the COP will need to be changed out to packs/wires if your truck had them. The MAF and injectors from the 4.6L will be fine, and the EEC from the 4.6L truck wil work too-you'll just need a tune for the displacement change so load calculation isn't all screwy.

the only way i would try this swap is with haveing the donnor truck that the motor came from.Just to have every thing else that may be needed. which i feel many of the fte guys have already stated. Good luck guy i think when it's all done you will be pleased with the hard work you did and gains received

by no means do you need a donor truck... you can fab things up and such... it comes down to how good you can think...

Lets say you have some hose inside your house for something stuped...

The motor is missing a hoes that is not normal...

The hose in the house works...

**** Its stuped things like that, that need to be worked out...

But if you have free time... a extra hand... And you know how to pull a motor...

YOU WILL BE 100% fine... just take your time and ask questions on things that stump
you... But dont get to ask happy... Because when you do things suck... You have to
stay on your feet ...

Im sorry i might not be makeing sence im just saying what i learned out loud lol...

shanesf150 is absolutely right. All you need is the complete engine-intake to oil pan,and a means to retune the EEC for the displacement and adjust the exhaust for fitament. Its really that simple.

What about the transmission? Will the tranny in my 4.6 work once I swap to the 5.4 motor?

You'll need the 5.4L mounts-I'm not sure if those cross or not,and the EEC and wiring harness will work as well. the two engines are the same except for displacement. They all use the same TPS,IAC,DPFE,CHT,etc, etc, etc. You may have to lengthen the wiring on a few of the connections, but that's only a slight possibility.

The transmission will work fine, plus you'll get more stall speed out of the converter since your input torque will be higher.
