20,000 mile update on my 05 PSD

Since I’ve installed the Plant Drive 6.0 PSD kit here are my results after 20,000 WVO miles.

I’ve gone through 3 of the Secondary filters that are part of the stock fuel system. I’ve gone through 5 Vormax filters. Although these are lasting me far longer now then they were in the early days of my conversion. I guess I prep my oil better now since I can get well over 6,000 miles out of the filters now. I currently use Baldwin BF1212 filters in the summer.

I’ve gone through 2 A1000 fuel pumps. One, about a month after I converted. It died trying to suck oil through a plugged filter. I moved my Vormax vacuum gage into the truck and I don’t have that issue any more. The last one went out suddenly as I was driving home about 4,000 miles ago. I’m going to try the Mallory pump next time this happens. I suspect it will happen again.

The truck it’s self has always thrown the CEL after about 300 miles. The code it throws is PO460 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit. That is because the fuel level does not go down as expected as the miles on the odometer go up. Annoying but easy to deal with, with the ODB II reader/clearer I have.

More recently I’ve started to get EGR related codes PO404 and PO1335. I can clear these and they come back after about 500 miles. I’ll ask the dealer about them at my next service. Not sure if this is WVO related or just one of the many issue with the 6.0 that is starting to make themselves apparent. I read lots of post about trucks that run nothing but #2 and they get these same codes. So for now I’m not too worried.

Over all I’ve been able to get twice as much mileage out of each tank of diesel then I did when I first started. I get any were from 1300-1600 miles between fillups. I commute to and from work 62 miles round trip. A few long weekend trips never tow or haul anything near the trucks capacity. The details of my fuel usage are on my web site.

The Plant Drive kit it’s self has worked great. All of the components supplied with the kit are still functioning the same way they were on day one.

I checked out your website and spreadsheet. You should add a column for original equipment cost (of the system and accessories) and maintenance items related to using WVO (Like filters, fuel pumps, etc.) to provide a complete picture of the cost of operation. For example, in May you are saying your cost per mile is 0.04, but you had to replace a stock filter. Also, since you are still using petrol diesel, you should also indicate the cost associated with filling up with this. You are obviously getting good mileage out of using this system, and it looks like it is working out well. So the things I mentioned won't detract from this, but will paint a bigger picture for people like me who are interested in this.

column F is the cost of the #2. Over all I have $3500 in parts invested now tat I've gone through two A1000 pumps.

Filters are consumable. Heck one of the stock filters would have been changed and was during routine maintenance. I pay I think 12 bucks for the Baldwin filters. Actually don't remember I think I bough5 and paid 68 bucks with shipping.

The stock filters cost me 50 bucks on Ebay. To bad you can't just buy the small one. I have a a few main filters sitting in my garage. It never sees the WVO.

I need to update my spreadsheet I'm two fillups behind. Waiting for this tank to go dry. I have just under a 1/2 tank and 1300 miles on it so far.

I love summer

I wouldn't think the egr codes are in anyway related to using WVO, I personally think your going to get them and your going to be replacing egr valves on any diesel that has them on it. And the newer ones are going to be even worse with the 6 egr valves, the epa has mandated stuff that is first inefficient and secondly very costly as well as really doesn't help anything, I drive a semi that has 2 egr valves on it, and at 230,000 miles has already gone through 3egr valves at the cost of $1400 each, and has never seen WVO, and just read a paper that shows that the new 07 emissions trucks the epa mandated changes are expected to raise the annual operating costs by approx $5000-8000 per year, and reduce fuel economy by approx 5-10% thus making us more depend on oil, not less.
The rest of what your saying I would expect, and sounding pretty good so far, keep us informed as thats the only way people find out what is really happening with this stuff.

OUCH!!!
They aren't cheap. Curious though - why do you run such a high flow rate fuel pump on it?
I ran one on my car (great little unit) - but it was making 700hp+ at the flywheel.
Is it to do with how heavy the fuel is?
More recently I’ve started to get EGR related codes PO404 and PO1335.
hmmm... I would agree with you - I don't think they would be WVO related.
Whats your drive cycle like? Do you tow up hills regularly (i.e. get it really hot)?
In the 6.0l forum, the guys that really work thier trucks hard are seeing less of these issues - burning all of the carbon out.

Oh, and if you don't mind me asking, what kind of mileage are you seeing?

The reason for the A1000 is for the pressure. You need 55-70 PSI.

I really have more truck then I need. But I bought this truck to convert since I need a truck and it was the smallest diesel truck I can buy in the US. My drive is a commute 31 miles one way at highway speeds mostly. Going home can be stop and go for the whole 31 miles. As often as I can I do WOT take offs from traffic lights. In fact I enjoy doing them on WVO since I don't feel guilty about wasting money doing it.

My #2 mileage is 16-17 MPG. Not sure on WVO. No good way to check it. I don't meter the fuel as I fill the WVO tank.

My miles per purchased gallons of diesel is very high in the 60s of MPPG

Well another 10,000 miles have gone by. Happily nothing eventful to report.

Entire system working as advertised. Filter life is great and I'm looking forward to the next 10,000 miles.

Hi Erick, Glad all is still going great for you, I got the Mega Vegtherm installed right after we talked. I am asking now if you would share what fuel filter you are running on your Vormax?

Thank you for this sight.

I have used Fleetgaurd FS1000 or the Baldwin filter BF 1259. It's been awhile since i bought them but I think the Baldwin filters were cheaper. Google the part numbers and you'll find them.
