Thanks for the link Bigredtruckmi. I found a station selling B20 about 1 mile from my office for a nickel a gallon less than straight dino-juice. What's even better is their price for #2 is already 10-15 cents cheaper than what I've been paying at the Shell station by my house. So I can burn B20 for 15-20 cents LESS than what I've been paying for #2....

From what I've read, running B20 I shouldn't need to use any Diesel Kleen or other additives either, right? If that's the case, there's another 5-6 cents a gallon savings - for a total of about a quarter a gallon! That's pretty significant in my book.

 

Yeah your right about not needing DK when using b20. But you might want to use an anti-get for the 80% dino diesel that its mixed with.

 

You are correct. No additives needed. Just when weather gets below 25 deg I would blend in some #2 to cut the bio to a B5 so it won't jell up or plug filter. Here in Michigan my retailer who delivers to the farm will NOT deliver anything over B5 from Nov to Mar timeframe.

The bio smells different doesn't it?

 

Well, here in western WA the temp almost never gets below 25 degrees, so I shouldn't have to worry much about gelling. In the last two months we've had two 3-day stretches and one 4-day stretch where the temps were at or below freezing. The lowest temps we saw were 19 (one day) the first time, 28 the second time and 27 the third time around. And that's unusually cold for this area.

The really great thing is that the station has the dino and bio pumps right next to each other - so if I want to do 50/50 for B10 or 25/75 for B5 it will easy enough to do. Dunno' what bio smells like - haven't tried it yet.

I'm going to fill up a tank on the way home to give it a try tonight, just to see how the ol' girl likes it. Even if I stick with dino, I think I've found a new and better place to buy my fuel....

 

One thing on the bio. It will definately clean your fuel system out of contaminates and place it in your fuel filter. So if you notice a power loss after the first tank. Replace the filter as it is getting plugged with very old contaminates.

 

Well, I filled up my rear tank - but it only took 12 gallons. So I guess I'm running about B12 right now (12 gallons B20 + 8 gallons #2).

I started out running Diesel Kleen at the rate of 2/3 ounce per gallon of fuel for about the first 4 - 5 tanks worth, and have been running it at the 1/3 ounce per gallon rate ever since - about 6 - 7 tanks worth now. Having pushed that much Diesel Kleen through the system, do you think it is likely that there are that quantity of deposits left in the tanks?

 

Actually you are running about a B8.5 with that mix. 12gal B20 X .20 = 2.4 gal of soy
2.4 / 20 = about 8.5%.. If your tank is larger than 20 gal then it will be less % of bio.

You should be good to go with the cleanout BUT I would keep a filter handy just in case for a while. Good luck and enjoy.

Gas prices just jumped here in central Michigan 30 cents but diesel stayed the same.

 

Not to be ornery here, but you might want to do the second part of that calculation again. By my calculator 2.4 / 20 = .12 or 12%.

I calculated it a little differently when I posted since I just did it in my head....

(12g/20g) x 20% = 12 gallons divided by 20 gallons times 20%
I looked at it this way. Since you're dividing by 20 (gallons) on the one hand, and multiplying by 20 (%) on the other, the two "20s" (20 gallons and 20%) cancel each other out - leaving you with your original number (12). BUT you DO have to move the decimal place two positions to the left to account for the fact that 20% is really .20. So you still get a result of .12 (which equals 12%)

Anyway.....

Yeah, I've kept one handy ever since I started running the Diesel Kleen through it. Good advice....

Haven't noticed any MAJOR jumps lately, but prices for gas have come down a little in the last couple of months (<$2.50 gallon), though the diesel prices haven't changed much. Seems to be more stable in terms of prices....

that link is cool, but I'm looking to buy some b-100 on the side is ok. cash I'm in the chicagoland area, but I go to Inidana, st Louis, Iowa, and Wisconsin often. Up to 90 gal a time in the summer
