Headlight Switch Knob

Headlight Switch ****
How do I remove the **** from the headlight switch on my '77 F250? The windshield wiper **** came off by pressing the retainer on the back. The headlight **** just looks like it's pressed onto the triangular shaft. Do I just pull it off? Trying not to break it. Thanks.

its kinda tricky, you have to reach up behind the dash (right above the Ebrake pedal) and grab ahold of the switch assembly..there is a button on it that unlocks shaft, when you press that button you use your other hand and pull the whole shaft out....its a little difficult at first, but once you get the feel for where its at it can be done rather easily.....

Dont try to pull the **** off the shaft, you can damage the ****, and light switch.
There is a push button on the light switch that releases the **** and shaft.
1: Disconnect your battery is the proper proceedure, but if you need to do wire testing that requires battery power, leave it connected, owners descression etc...
2: Turn your headlights on to the full on position.
3: Locate the push button on the headlamp switch, by reaching your and under the dash to locate it.
4: Push the button, at the same time pulling on the ****. The **** and shaft should come out of the switch easy.
5: If you leave the battery connected, Lightly press the **** back into the switch to turn the lamps back off.
6: To replace **** into switch after you are done, push **** into switch hard enough to engage the shaft into the switch. Check operation.

The correct and un-frustrating way is the way Ralph (F150 -Explorer) explains it.
By pulling the headlight switch to the full ON position first......then pressing the button and pulling the **** out...easily without effort.

Is it safe to assume that if I don't have any dash lights that it is the light switch? I haven't had my truck very long so I thought maybe they just burned out over the years. After looking at some threads here it seems like the light switch might be the culprite. Still having trouble getting it out though. I can't find the release button. Where exactly is it?

On the top side of the headlight switch, provided the headlight switch is put in correctly. If you have A/C you can take out the vent duct on the left side and just about see the button you need to push. It is mandatory you turn the headlights on all the way then push the button and pull the ****/shaft out. If you push the button and then turn the headlights on it will not come out.
