96 F350 question
Well I picked up this new truck the other day. Got pointed to this forum by the guy that bought my Excursion. I saw a 4 door F350 7.3 last year and joked to the wife about finding one. Well I did find one and it's a pretty cool truck. The 02 F350 dually long bed 4 door I had was pretty sweet to.
I've read a bit, got some good info. My diesel experience is not much... a few chips here and there, a few cold air kits, some custom exhaust work and that's about it. My modded diesels in the last 10 years are mild I guess.. as compared to what I read about. Other than a ATS tranny in a Ram 3500 I owned, nothing ever major.
This 96 has been modded a bit. The previous owner pointed out to me the down pipe that was replaced and it's got a cleanable filter in it on a cut factory tube. He put the 3 pack gauges on it and gave me the Edge Programmer for it as well. The number 2 setting is more than edequate for me. The exhaust is straight through. The truck has all kinds of good solid power. Tranny shifts nice and solid. It's got only 68 K original miles w/ 410's in it.
So my question is if I am getting on it a bit and the EGT's are hitting the 1100 mark in the number 2 setting of the programmer, will towing 7 to 9000 LBS during the summer cause me to have to light foot the throttle climbing mountains while towing? I guess I'm wondering if the intercooler is a necessary mod or is there anything else that can be done to keep the temps down.

3 options, light foot, run less HP tune or get an Intercooler. even with an IC you may need to watch the gauge pretty close. for that matter no matter what you do you may need to watch the gauge closely.
I would hook it up early in the season and go for a test drive and see what the temps do with the trailer behind you.

look and see if the pyro is mounted before or after the turbo, if it's before the turbo 1100 isn't to high, the cut off is 1250 if the pyro is mounted before the trubo, if it's after the turbo i would stay below 950.
I would bet that it is mounted before the turbo cuz i cant get mine above 1250 unless i have about 8,000lbs behind it. I have the pyro in the drivers side manifold, and have a bully dog chip.

I guess it's the Egge programmer in combo w/ the 410's. I guess I just need to hook it up and tow of which I have not done because the hitch is a class V Titan. That thing has a 2.5" ID tube on it so I need to get some new towing stuff.
your x
intercooled
larger exhaust
your obs stroke
smashed dp and
not intercooled...
do a few mods:
intake
exhaust including downpipe
intercooler
then report back.
